这就是一句强调句了，强调in the place.
强调句的话把it is that去掉读意思。
原句就变成

in the place that tales occupied in
the lives of the slaves and in the meaning slaves
derived from them the clearest resemblances to
African tradition can be found.

变一下顺序就是 the clearest resemblances to
African tradition can be found in the place that tales occupied in
the lives of the slaves and in the meaning slaves
derived from them.

大意就是黑人的传统可以在那些讲述奴隶生活的tales 和奴隶从那些tale中懂得的道理中发现。

基本上能够读出
The clearest resemblances to African tradition can be found (found 在哪里？found在那些东西里面）就行了。。

意思是说，
