好吧我自问自答，解读这个题目是不是可以这样想
I believe it means that politicians should look to find a solution that satisfies the general good rather than sticking with their ideals. For example, right now we have the problem of raising taxes or not. There are people who say that their [elusive] idea is that we should not raise taxes on anyone anywhere. If we don't raise taxes, the US deficit will be too high and could cause the country to go bankrupt. Others say that we have to raise taxes a little (and maybe only on some people) to prevent a bankruptcy. Those who hold the latter view so that we need to do it for the common good--to prevent the country going bankrupt. Obama originally proposed raising taxes on people making $250,000 a year or more. Now, for the "common good," he changed it to $400,000. Those who say that no taxes should be raised (NO MATTER WHAT) are sticking to their ideals and say NO new taxes no matter what.
Or take the issue of abortion. Some say, no abortion, no matter what. Not even if the mother's life is in danger. Others say that abortion should be legal no matter what. Common ground might say that abortion is okay if the mother's life is in danger, if the baby will be totally malformed, or up to five months.
I personally believe in looking for common ground that benefits us all.
Think of the issue of smoking. Some say no smoking under any circumstances. Others say that they have the right to smoke anytime, anywhere. The compromise that we have now is that you cannot smoke in restaurants, schools, stores, and some other places, but you can smoke in your home and outside. That was a consensus arrived at after many years of arguing.
