Hi Olivia Lei:
Sorry for this abrupt email. I`m a Chinese undergraduate student from DaLian University of Technology. From your name and head portrait I guess you are from China, but I`d better use English to write to you.
As a junior student majoring in physics, I have great interest in surface and films physics. I really want to know what`s your everyday work in the Xiaoxing Xi`s research group. And can you introduce some of your undergraduate research experience and applying experience to me?
Thank you very much!
Sincerely,
----------
Hi,
Do you mean graduate research in my group? I suppose that you want to apply for Temple graduate school.
Basically we grow superconductor and oxides thin films and measure transport property, AFM, XRD to tell the film quality, surface and structure. We have three major projects: MgB2 superconductor films, MgB2 circuits and oxide thin films. The methods we use are CVD (chemical vapor deposition) and PLD (pulsed laser deposition). We have pictures of our equipments and publication list on our website that you can look through.

Hi, Olivia,
Thanks for your introduction. In my view, you are doing experiment physics, right? But I`ve heard from my professors that generally no physics research group could do a exclusive experiment research, or in other words, the analysis of the data grained from the experiment is necessary or even more important. To what extent do you do things on theoritical work? Just analysis the data to draw a conclusion about the phenomenon and explain it just qualitatively?
Maybe I haven`t express my question well. As a undergraduate student, I`m not sure about what quality I need to apply to Physics department of Temple University. Which one of research experience, Toefl, GRE or GPA takes the most important place? Also, I have great interest in your undergraduate achievements and your applying experience so I can find out in what aspect should I pay more effort to to enrich myself. Thanks for your sharing. But if you think these information is so private to share, thanks all the same.
Sincerely,
----------
Hi,
I have one question, just out of curiosity. If you are going to apply, is it going to be next year?
Toefl, GRE, GPA are equally important in applications to most of the U.S. universities. I did first principle calculation in undergraduate school, which is not very relevant to my current work. Your English is fine to me, based on the email. Your university has a relatively good reputation in our group because we had a post doc graduated from your university. I don't know much about the standard of our department and it varies from year to year. You'll never know the result unless you try application.

Hi Olivia,
Yes, I`m going to apply for 2013 autumn term.
It seems that first principle calculation is quite profound. Did you apply for PhD when you planning to study in Temple University? Do professors concern more about your research ability when they want offering a PhD degree? And what extent do you think a undergraduate student should achieve to apply for a further study in U.S.(I think it is a little harsh for undergraduate to publish paper or letter.)?
To be honest, I haven`t heard about Temple University before. I click into the Xiaoxing Xi`s group`s website through Penn State University. What`s the relationship between these two university? As far as I can see on the internet, I find Temple University is not a university special in science or technology. What`s you idea about studying physics in such a university?(I`m not saying Temple University is not good.)
Forgive my curiosity, are you Chinese? If you are, I think I have a lot of detail-concerned question to ask you.
Thanks a lot for your help!
Bests,

Dr. Xi moved from penn state to temple. No relationship between them. I am Chinese, will be out of campus this week.

Olivia,
Thanks. I would think about my confusion this week and write to you next Monday.
Thanks again!
Sincerely,
