201. "The purpose of education should be to provide students with a value system, a standard, a set of ideas--not to prepare them for a specific job."
12:04
Throughout the history of human history, countless examples substantiate the key role played by education in promoting the development of our society. However, problems such as what are the purposes of the education and which one is the most important among them - value system or qualified workers - have been put in front of us. In my opinion, educators should recognize the possibility and necessity to combine them together well instead of determine which is more important.
On the one hand, in any society, educators should take the survival of individuals as the most important item, which would give prominence to job-related purpose of education. We would look no further than the example of Northern Korea several years ago. Owing to some special reasons, which would have to be discussed here, Northern Korea has experienced the toughest stage during its foundation and its people suffered from starvation for several years. The people in Northern Korea, tormented by starvation, need something to eat and how to plant potatoes instead of a value system. Therefore, when the survival of people has been threatened, job-related training would be more important than other purposes of education.
On the other hand, education also should take into account the necessity of providing students a value system, a standard, a set of ideas. Only through this, education would orient the learners in order lest they would be misled in this complex society. Therefore, they would see a full picture of the society and be careful of the influence of their actions on themselves and others around them.
Simply put, without the consideration of the latter purpose, individuals and the society as a whole would suffer from countless moral problems due to the shortage of personal responsibility. Even in the advanced countries, crimes of all sorts, from robbery to murder, from thievery to those high-tech crimes, and so forth, would not just be owed to the mistreatment of their government or their laws. In this point, as far as I am concerned, personal responsibility, one part of personal value system, which would be shaped by education, whenever from the beginning of their formation or after their formation, plays a quite important role in those crimes. From the criminal cases, everyone who would like to live in a peaceful circumstance would jump to a conclusion: to education our citizens to a right direction - a value system on the right way.
Furthermore, without the attention of the long-term purpose of education, the human beings as a whole would suffer from some catastrophes. With the development of urbanization and globalization, while people within the scope of the whole world have enjoyed the advanced civilization, some of them and their offspring would suffer from the catastrophes brought by modern civilizations, such as air pollution, desertification, deforestation, shortage of fossil energy, and so on. To all intents and purposes, solution of those problems would call for the ideas of sustaining development and the ability to master the whole picture, which could be incubated to the modern people, especially those in power.
To conclusion, I would claim that, though education would have to take into consideration job-related purpose, educators should pay more attention to provide the learners with a value system, a standard, a set of ideas, which would benefit themselves and the society as a whole, even our offspring.
