There`s no doubt that the general welfare is the effective indicator of a great nation. As well known by all, Present Lincoln once explained the duty of a nation in The Gettysburg Address, which is that a nation should be built of the people, by the people and for the people. Welfare is most often used to refer to cash benefits the government provides, which does do a favor for the basic national material comforts to improve people`s standard life. That`s what a great nation really concerns about. However, other indicators also available to characterize a great nation, like the achievement of its rulers, artists or scientists.

Admittedly, when comes to a great nation, it not only refers to a booming economic and the wealth people possess. The social spirit it presents, however, is much more significant. rulers, artists or scientists, symbol of a nation`s social spiritual, endow a country brightness in the human history. Not only the developmental foundation of a nation, but also the power to promote social progress, is it that the social spirit can also be the important indicator of a great nation. For example, the establishment of U.S. Constitution relied on a group of America`s founders. These brilliant men, as the rulers of this new country, draft out the great U.S. Constitution based on the Natural Law. It provides a firm ground for American development. From then on, the spirit of Constitution, as a guideline in ordinary American`s life becomes the indispensible part. These national founders play a significant role in the American prosperity.        

Furthermore, the ordinary people also need the benefits these social-spiritual leaders` achievement brings. In this real-modern society, the most concerned topic of people is how to own genuine happiness in their lives. However, the material content only couldn`t promote the feeling of happiness in their life. The achievement of artists and scientists, such as music, painting, the moon exploration actually can inspire people`s mind and enrich their lives. As we know, music has become a favorite way for some people to relax themselves after a stressful day and also a represent of a high quality of life. It is obvious to all that the science development has a huge influence in people`s ordinary life. A repaid expansion of internet, telecommunications networking and transport, etc. takes places everywhere and everyday. We even cannot imagine what life will be without these developments which provide convenience. The duty of a country is to serve its people by heart and soul. For that point, the achievement of scientists and artists is also necessary for us to indicate a nation`s great.

In sum, a nation should do what is best to guarantee its people`s life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Although, the general welfare can satisfy their material requirement, the increase of spiritual demand requires more social-spiritual achievement in a nation. The outstanding rulers, artists, or scientists, as the social-spiritual leaders in a nation, not only can meet people`s spiritual demand, also contribute to the growth of the country. It can be the surest indicator do a great nation.
