答案的意思是 人们使用 rhetoric的目的就是为了rational being, to persuade.

回原文验证B
Yet it is，你需要知道 it代表什么，代表logic, 于是我们看到 Logic appeals to emotion and empathy. rhetoric is only means.

第9题的答案E中motivation的来源。这是旧GRE的原文：
Under the force of this view, it was perhaps inevitable that the art of rhetoric should pass from the status of being regarded as of questionable worth (because although it might be both a source of pleasure and a means to urge people to right action, it might also be a means to distort truth and a source of misguided action) to the status of being wholly condemned. If people are regarded only as machines guided by logic, as they were by these “scientistic” thinkers, rhetoric is likely to be held in low regard; for the most obvious truth about rhetoric is that it speaks to the whole person.

原文都给找出来了,谢谢~~红色字体部分确实比较明显的, a source of pleasure and a means to urge to right action~~第9题确实好做得多了~
仅根据原文，我根据版主的解答，应该算是引申，low regard=disparage ,rational being =理性的人，在经济学里面，理性的人就是与人的动机有关~可以推导出答案。如果真要是考试的时候，遇到这么个题目，我只能说运气不好~~

个人有点不同意
首先我觉得Yet it is ...这一句是个强调句式，it指代的是a characterizing feature of rhetoric，yet明显是有个转折的语气，如果it这里说的是logic不太通啊，而且，个人也觉得rhetoric才是appeal to 那些feeling，desiring的。如果按照版主的说法it指代logic，那么最后一句It recalls ...中的It也应该指代logic，但是真正的GRE原文里，下面接的是“Such is the purpose of both historical accounts and fables in persuasive discourse：...”，那些fables和historical accounts难道都是logic么？
如果按我的想法，题10的B选项是不是可以理解成“It is an essential element of persuasive  discourse, but only one (of) such element.” logic只是其中一个element？不然参考答案B就有和我对原文理解有点点矛盾了啊

我觉得motive应该是从原文这里来的，这段应该是36里没有的

　　But those who reject the idea of rhetoric because they believe it deals in lies and who at the same time hope to move people to action, must either be liars themselves or be very naive; pure logic has never been a motivating force unless it has been subordinated to human purposes, feelings, and desires, and thereby ceased to be pure logic.

谢谢~~~这个原文是哪篇，能不能给出具体的题号，才开始做NO题和国内题，不知道与定位句是不是一个段落里面的，如果是的话，还是蛮有说服力的~~反正我刚开始对这篇完全没感觉，不过后面被版主的解释指点了下，才明白过来~~
