"Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive, because it is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated."
I don’t think that this question has any meaning. And the reason given for the question why governments should ensure that their major cities receive the financial support is also quite ridiculous.
Firstly, every place of a country, no matter whether it is a major one or just a small and obscure one, hopes to develop their economy in order to thrive. To reach this goal, they are all eager to get the financial support from their government, which will help them a lot in many aspects. If the government only considers the need of those major cities, which has already exceeded secondary cities in economy, in the average income of the population and in welfare, imbalance will be created and aggravated between metropolis and small countries. And as soon as imbalance is exacerbated, the contradiction among people of the country will become more and more serious and then conflict appears. Take china for example, this developing country has witnessed tremendous development during these years. Some major cities, such as shanghai, Beijing etc, have experienced big changes in everything, the life style, average income, values of life, culture and so on. Their progress in economy is due to much financial support of Chinese government besides their own advantage and striving. However, when these major cities are granted innumerable help from the government, those poor countries are still poor, people there are still living in poverty, worrying about the food and clothes and house. While we are thinking about the question whether governments should give much more help to big cities, we should ask ourselves very seriously whether most of population in our country has been free from the problem of living and studying.
Secondly, I truly doubt the saying that a nation’s cultural traditions are preserved and generated in major cities. Even if one didn’t know how to judge whether traditions are not spoiled in metropolises, one could deduce it from the life style of the citizens in these cities. In fact, many major cities around the world have become homogenized because of globalization. And the word “global-village” reflects the true situation of the world today. If we compare the life style of people in Tokyo with it in New York, we will find that the similarity has covered the difference in many aspects. And the difference of cultural traditions has given way to the similarity of values of life. Thus, I dare to conclude that cultural traditions have been overwhelmed by the modernization in major cities. In contrast, many countries are still preserving some traditions and cherishing those essences handed down from one generation to another. When we go to some minorities in china, we would find some special rituals there, for example, the “sprinkling-water feast” in Dai minority. For this reason, I think that if the question what kind of areas in one country should receive financial support from government is answered according to the condition whether they preserve the traditions well, major cities should be the first one crossed out.
In the end, I’d like to present my conclusion as follows. Major cities are definitely important in accelerating the development of the country and need government’s support in many aspects apart from the financial support. However, the country should not just stare at the construction of those metropolises, many poor areas are waiting to be cared and given help. What we strive to realize is to balance the development between rich and poor cities. The cultural traditions are emblem of the spirit and faith of a country. To preserve them is a way to differentiate us from other countries and is a way to explore the glorious history of our race. To prevent them from spoiling, we need to support remote areas in finance and policy. Besides, we should make museums and some performances having something to do with propagating cultural traditions in big cities exert influence on those citizens who are losing the spirit of their own country. |
