Parents surmise that the university education can prepare their children for employment opportunities, but others believe that universities have some more functions. What other functions do you think can a university perform?
Nowadays, universities across the world have shown a tendency adapting their curriculum for vocational purposes, since most students have associated their job-seeking convenience with higher education. It mirrors one of stereotypes which have been reinforced year after year in people’s mind –universities serve no other purpose but a livelihood. Responding to this issue, this writing will expound three other main functions a university can fulfil.
First of all, a university can develop students’ communication skills, educate them how to cope with interpersonal relationship, and make them more sociable. Students of today face stiff competition from their peers, for which reason they bear a grudge against each other. Not surprisingly, a frozen relationship is the end product. A university can help students replace rivalry with a friendship, through a series of well-organised activities, such as seminars, balls, outings, etc.
Secondly, a university can help to shape students’ life attitude, moral values, or other spiritual merits. Influenced by different cultural, ethical, academic or social background, students might hold some unusual views toward the life, which can potentially deter their personal development. For instance, some students from low-income families might appear to be particularly independent or individualistic. It might bring a certain positive outcome on some instances, but could also damage their life in the worse cases. Therefore, a university could modify their characteristics by virtue of consultation, lectures, or other relevant services.
Last but not least, a university can cultivate students’ interests on some specific majors. The majors stressed here are not necessarily those profitable majors, e.g., economics, business, accounting, law, etc. In the broadest sense, it covers every possible field we can find nowhere else but in human civilisation. It can help to widen the extent to which you comprehend particular issues, and thus benefit your future.
In conclusion, apart from job prospect, a university can help some other aspects of your life, including your social skills, your ethical concepts, and academic interest.
