cynicism是MT对societal change的观点，
而antithetical to the United Stated doctrine of progress是American public对MT这个cynicism的观点。

cynicism应该推不出来antithetical to the United Stated doctrine of progress

我的理解就是cynicism是MT的观点，MT认为peaceful是不对的
你的意思是说MT认为peaceful是不对的，但是MT不知道他的观点是否与public相抵触？

马克吐温对技术进步和社会发展持负面态度，而美国民众却认为进步与发展是美国社会应该秉持的信条（所谓美国梦。。）。是马克吐温自绝于人民群众。B项说社会发展的益处方兴未艾，与美国社会的信念（教条）相对。这显然是矛盾的，美国人认为越发展越好。
