161. "In this age of intensive media coverage, it is no longer possible for
a society to regard any woman or man as a hero. The reputation of anyone
who is subjected to media scrutiny will eventually be diminished."
This is a information age, although many of things that we have almost no chance to learn the truth in the relatively secretive society, now have been easily attained through media and the relevant attitudes have been drastically refreshed, that our criteria of judging hero still remain the same. Hero is regarded and recognized as a result of one's behavior that must be largely contributed to society and country, rather than is determined by few people or media. In this sense, hero does exist, regardless of what influence media would impose on.
Many people may sincerely believe that it is difficult for a society to regard anyone as a hero due to effect
of media, however we do not have to go very far to see the invalidity of this judgment. Generally speaking, the function of media is mainly to report a incident. If it were a incident that is harmful to society, we together object and despise it. Inversely, it were a event that is beneficial to most people in society, we praise and learn from it. Thereby, those who act as protagonists in the public-benefited activities would naturally be regard as heroes and acquire positive report by media. For example, a young pioneer who actively provides his seat to the pregnant and the old in bus is regarded as a hero of politeness and love; a young man who saves a drowning child in the river is regarded as a hero of kindness and oldness; a thoughtful scientist who solves out the main problem are regard as hero of wisdom and devotion. In all, heroes is objectively heroes, it is what he perform rather than media that makes him to be our hero.
Another misconception that many people may hold is that hero is necessarily connected with reputation. But they fail to notice that there are numerous heroes in our society that their names and stories are volunteer or passively concealed. This is simple principle, even one can not deduce it oneself, that we can easily draw from the concrete fact of Anti-flood battle in 1998. It was reported through media that there are nearly twenty thousand soldiers who joined this incident, and they functioned as main force of anti-flood and devoted themselves even precious lives in token of affection and fearlessness. Therefore the media profoundly reported their anecdotes and people cast vast gratitude and adoration. However, almost individuals are not solitarily reported. Do not we think they are hero? And where is their reputation?
Some people may also take for granted that the reputation of any hero is destined to be ruined due to the intervention of media. Yet, a careful examination would reveal this is not the case. Take SARS for example, as we know, SARS is fiercely infective disease cause by Coronvirus. It is easily transmitted by air and inhaled through respiratory tract. As one of my anesthesiology professor told us in class, "Here are several pictures of my college classmates and friends in our hospital, in the dangerous battle against SARS, they all unluckily get infected and now had died. they are our heroes, we should learn from their spirit and keep them in the bottom of heart forever." I can still remember that out professor spoke with tears as well as passion. Definitely, to save lives of patients is doctors' obligation, while they have no obligation of sacrificing themselves. Nevertheless, they devoted their precious lives. And we can not think out any reason that the media could use to deteriorate these heroes' reputation, because hero is after all hero, and they should receive nothing but gratitude and respect.
In sum, one of the fundamental functions of media is to disinter heroes, while heroes are not necessarily those who share specific reputation. In the promise of another tomorrow, we will never let heroes be diminished, because they are always served as paradigm in our heart.
后记:
