Who Moved My Cheese ...
"Who Moved My Cheese?" ...
a book by Spencer Johnson, M.D.
Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived four little characters that ran through a Maze looking for Cheese to nourish them and make them happy. Two were mice named "Sniff' and "Scurry." And two were little-people, the size of mice, who looked and acted a lot like people do today. Their names were "Hem" and "Haw."
As they ran through the Maze, they all finally found the Cheese at Cheese Station "C." When Sniff and Scurry arrived at Cheese Station C each day, they took off their running shoes, tied them together, and hung them around their necks so they would be ready. However, when Hem and Haw arrived, they put their running shoes away, as they believed they would not need them for a good while.
Finding Cheese was important to the little-people although each had their own idea of Cheese, depending upon their tastes. For Hem, it meant being a "Big Cheese" living in a mansion atop Camembert Hill. For Haw, it was having a loving family in a cozy cottage on Cheddar Lane.
Hem and Haw made themselves at home at Cheese Station C and became very comfortable. They even wrote sayings on the wall and drew pictures of Cheese around them. One read:
"Having Cheese Makes You Happy"
Then one day Sniff and Scurry arrived at Cheese Station C to find the Cheese wasn't in its usual place. They sniffed and scurried around until they decided the Cheese must be somewhere else. So they scurried out into the maze to look for new cheese. The situation had changed, so Sniff and Scurry changed.
Later, Hem and Haw arrived at Cheese Station C and were startled. "No Cheese?" "No Cheese?" Hem yelled. "Who Moved My Cheese?" he demanded. "Who Moved My Cheese?" Then Hem put his hands on his hips and his face turned red as he shouted at the top of his voice, "It's not fair!"
Everyday the little-people went back Cheese Station C ... where the Cheese used to be. And they demanded to know, "Who Moved My Cheese?" Because Cheese was important to them, the little-people spent a long time trying to decide what to do.
Sniff and Scurry, on the other side of the coin, had quickly moved on... but Hem and Haw continued to hem and haw. Timed passed and they became weary. They had not had any Cheese for a long time.
Hem demanded, "Why did they do this to me? What's really going on around here?" Haw said, "Hem, why don't we stop analyzing the situation so much and just go and find some New Cheese?" "Oh no," Hem said. "I'm going to get to the bottom of this."
Finally, one day Haw saw what Hem was doing and laughed at himself. "Look at us," he said. "We keep doing the same things and wonder why it doesn't get better for us." He looked around for his running shoes. When he found them, he put them on. Hem asked, "You're not going out into the Maze are you? What if you don't find any Cheese out there?" Haw wrote on the wall:
"If You Do Not Change
You Can Become Extinct"
Then, Haw stuck his head out and peered anxiously into the maze. He felt afraid. So he wrote a saying on the wall, then stepped back and stared at it for some time:
"What Would You Do
If You Weren't Afraid?"
Haw took a deep breath and went into the maze. For a long time, he found no Cheese and had his doubts. But then, as he explored the Maze, he began to imagine himself finding his favorite Cheese from Cheddar to Brie! The more clearly he saw the vision of New Cheese, the more real it became to him, and the more he could sense that he was going to find it. Even in the middle of his trials and errors, his confidence was growing. Then he stopped and wrote on the wall:
"Imagining Myself Enjoying New Cheese
Even Before I find it,
Leads Me To It!"
Haw continued through the Maze and finally spotted a few little pieces of New Cheese and tried them. They were delicious. He saved a few. Then he made his way back to Cheese Station C, but when he offered Hem bits of New Cheese, Hem refused. "I don't think I would like New Cheese," Hem said. "It's not what I'm used to. I want my own Cheese back. And, I'm not going to change.
Haw just shook his head and reluctantly went back out into the Maze on his own. A good deal had changed for Haw since his early days at Cheese Station C. He used to believe that Cheese should never be moved and that change wasn't right. Now he realized it was natural for change to continually occur. When he realized he had changed his beliefs, Haw paused to write on the Maze wall:
"Old Beliefs Do Not Lead You To New Cheese"
Haw was glad he had written on the wall in many places. He still hoped it would serve as a marked trail for Hem to follow through the maze if he ever left Cheese Station C. But, would Hem be able to read the "Handwriting on the Wall?"
Then Haw came to a part of the Maze where he had never been before. By now, Haw had let go of the past, and was adapting to the present. And then it happened! He rounded a comer and heard Sniff and Scurry nearby, squealing with delight, Haw had found Cheese Station "N!"
Piled everywhere was the greatest supply of New Cheese he had ever seen! Haw wondered if it was real or just his imagination until he heard Sniff and Scurry welcome him. Haw pulled off his shoes, tied them together, and hung them around his neck. Sniff and Scurry laughed.
Haw was going to be ready for change this time! When he had his fill of a variety of great New Cheeses, he wrote a summary on the wall of what he had learned:
THE HANDWRITING ON THE WALL
Change Happens
They keep moving the Cheese
Anticipate Change
Get Ready For The Cheese To Move
Monitor Change
Smell The Cheese Often So You
Know When It Is Getting Old
Adapt To Change Quickly
The Quicker You Let Go Of Old Cheese
The Sooner You Can Enjoy New Cheese

Move With The Cheese
Enjoy Change!
Savor The Adventure And
Enjoy The Taste Of New Cheese
Be Ready To Change Quickly
And Enjoy It Again, And Again!
They Keep Moving The Cheese
Sometime later, Haw heard the sound of someone approaching Cheese Station "N." Could it be that Hem was arriving? Was he about to turn the corner? Was it too good to be true or had Hem gone beyond his comfort zone and past his fear? Haw hoped, that maybe, at last, his friend was finally able to...
"Move To The New Cheese
And Enjoy It!"
THE END
