Issue148 开学前的最后一篇烂作
Issue 148
" Many people admire idealism, but it usually leads to disappoinment or touble."
Does idealism usually lead to disappointment or trouble as the speaker asserts? In my observation, the answer, no matter it is "Yes" or "No", oversimplifies the problem. Whether idealism can bring benefit to the person who holds it is up to the very person's personality. If the person is a pessimist, idealism may be a disaster to him/her, while, if the person holds a optimistic attitude towards everything, idealism would be instrumental in winning himself/herself achievements.
What is idealism, in the eyes of a pessimist, idealism is only a method that pessimists choose for themselves to escape from the reality. In other words, pessimists don't have the courage to face the music, and they are used to bury their heads in the sand which is composed by idealism. Just due to pessimists' own deficiency in personality, they usually cannot hold a right attitude to idealism, in other words, to their dreams. In this kind of circumstance, their dreams will never bring benefit or pleasure to them, simply because of two reasons. First and foremost, dreams, for those pessimists, is only a non-practical fantasy, not an aim which has the inner power to stimulate people to struggle and make great efforts. As a result, pessimists will not make any effort, if any, to realize the dreams. Just as what I have said above, dreams are only the mirror of pessimists' timidity. Secondly, even though pessimists make some effort to realize those dreams, they will not stick to their aims. I think this results from their personality as well. Once frustrated or discouraged, those people will give up their attempts to their aims, depressed easily and become the loser of themselves. Consequently, idealism is not a way that directs pessimists to success but rather a path that leads them to complete failure.
When the question comes to optimists, or at least those people who are not pessimists, the result will change. Idealism or dreams will provide those people an ultimate aim which can motivate them to work industriously. When encountered difficulties, optimists who have a dream will try their best to conquer those obstructions. From this point of view, idealism can bring perseverance to people. With the help of perseverance, even though the work is dull or full of difficulties, people will not lose confidence and give up half-way. The idealists Gandhi and Martin Luther King are just cases in point. Had those brave idealists concerned themselves with immediate needs rather than their notions of establishing a ideal country; had those brave idealists gave up when they met impediments rather than courageously faced the difficulties, Indian today might still be British colonies and African-American might still be relegated in the backs of buses.
In sum, for pessimists whose destiny is failure, idealism can only accelerate their process to failure and bring psychological bitterness to them; while, for optimists who have the strong will to success and are motivated by their aims, idealism will be a lighthouse which can enlighten and direct them in their voyage to success.
