"To truly understand your own culture-no matter how you define it-requires personal knowledge of at least one other culture, one that is distinctly different from your own."
--------------------
18:20
--------------------
In the age of globalization, more and more people have realized that a very effective and even the best way to truly understand their own culture is to learn at least one disparate culture for comparison. In fact, a new group of academic disciplines named comparative studies have risen recently, culture study included.

It is natural for people to overlook or ignore the things that no comparison stands along with them. An example in physics illustrates this point. Although our ancestors had long felt the move of air--wind, only when having discovered the emptiest emptiness, namely vacuum, did people began to deeply study and understand the nature of air. Before the discovery of vacuum, people took granted that an empty cup contained "nothing", while after, they knew there was something transparent in it. Contrast here made people aware of the existence of an important thing around us and revealed the nature of it.

Similarly, in day-to-day lives, people also experience but do not sense their own culture if they have ever known only this very one culture that cannot compare itself. Usually, people just take culture as transparent as air: inhaling it, exhaling it, but never recognize it. As a result, people can seldom find out the essential strengths and weaknesses of their culture, which therefore evolves very slowly.

One who returns homeland from a different culture often is particularly penetrating and insightful to the good and bad sides of his or her mother culture. That is not because experiences in another culture has endued him or her with more wisdom, but the result of the comparison between two disparate cultures occurs to him or her.

Comparison is like a mirror. Without the help of a mirror, people can hardly know what they (especially, their faces) look like. Comparison of different cultures works in the same way by reflecting the image of the front side of a culture in another one. It is the angle provided by such comparison that enlightens people to understand their own culture much better.

I, for example, recently am reading a book about Chinese, written by a Western missionary a century ago. It is really interesting to observe my ancestors in the eye of a westerner, whose culture shared little with that of Chinese. And I surprisingly realized many respects of my traditional culture, which appeared odd to the writer. One case impressed me most. We Chinese, even today, regard it a good manner to warmly welcome guests by over-treating. The writer, however, pointed out that this ostensibly polite treatment actually troubled the guests and took no respect to their real needs.

In the mirror of another distinctly different culture, people of one culture learns knowledge not only of the other culture but also of their own one. Usually, such comparison inspires people to take responsibility to ameliorate and even reform their culture, which will produce a more advanced culture that is worth a better sense of pride. That might be a reason why some declare that globalization does not uniform diverse cultures in the world but in fact make them more and more "local", helping them to truly understand themselves and evolve faster.

It is natural for people to overlook or ignore the things thatwith which,否则后面的那个THEM就不好理解了 no comparison stands along with them. An example in physics illustrates this point. Although our ancestors had long felt the move of air--wind, only when having discovered the emptiest emptiness, namely vacuum, did people began to deeply study and understand the nature of air. Before the discovery of vacuum, people took granted that an empty cup contained "nothing", while afterthe discovery.虽然罗嗦了点,不过偶觉得有必要, they knew there was something transparent in it. Contrast here made people aware of the existence of an important thing around us and revealed the nature of it.

while after, they knew there was...
if they have ever known only this very one culture的确不顺,但我当时想尝试一下,看来效果不行。
I, for example, recently am...
people of one culture learns knowledge not only of the other culture but also[这里少了一个that,指代knowledge。] of their own one.
“赶紧考试去”?DriverEntry不是开玩笑吧?我现在的速度还慢得很。

水平较低,错误评点还请见凉.
莫听穿林打叶声,
何妨吟啸且徐行,
竹杖芒鞋轻胜马。
谁怕!

山头斜照却相迎。
回首向来萧瑟处,
归去,
也无风雨也无晴。

my comment

"To truly understand your own culture-no matter how you define it-requires personal knowledge of at least one other culture, one that is distinctly different from your own."

In the agePROCESS I THINK BETTER of globalization, more and more people have realized that a very effective and even the best way to truly understand their own culture is to learn at least one disparate culture for comparison. In fact, a new group of academic disciplines named comparative studies have risen recently, culture study included. A WONDEFUL BEGINNING

It is natural for people to overlook or ignore the things that这个 THAT 修饰 THINGS? no comparison stands along with them. A SERIOUS PROBLEM :THE TOPIC REFERS TO CULTURE。IN ADDITION, THE TWO CONCEPT BOTH BELONG TO THE PHISICS REALM

Similarly, in day-to-day lives, people also experience but do not sense their own culture if they have ever known only this very one culture that cannot compare itself. Usually, people just take culture as transparent as air: inhaling it, exhaling it, but never recognize it.GOOD SENTENCE ,I THINK As a result, people can seldom find out the essential strengths and weaknesses of their culture, which therefore evolves very slowly.I THINK HERE YOU MAY COMBINE THE FOLLOWING PARA WITH THIS ONE TO ILLUSTRATE THIS VIEWPOINT

Usually, such comparison inspires people to take responsibilityYOU HAVEN‘T REFERED TO RESPONSIBILITY IN THE FORESTATED PARA to ameliorate and even reform their culture, which will produce a more advanced culture that is worth a better sense of pride. That might be a reason why some declare that globalization does not uniform diverse cultures in the world but in fact make them more and more "local", helping them to truly understand themselves and evolve faster.
