Issue1

"We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress an inhibit learning."

Different people have different styles of making friends. Some keep contact only with friends who share views with themselves, others would rather make friends with people who hold different opinions. From people who share our views, we can get confidence which help learning, while from those who disagree with us, we get the other thoughts beyond our brain, which help broaden our knowledge.

There is a famous story about the great physicists Bohr and Feynman. When Feynman was still a new guy in scientific world, Bohr was already an authority in quantum mechanics. One day Bohr went to Feynman’s university to give a speech, during the speech, all the responses to Bohr’s work were positive; but Feynman, at the end of the speech, stood up, pointed out some errors in the speech, then argued with Bohr. The second time Bohr went to America, he refused many celebrity’s invitation but invited Feynman (not famous at that time yet) for personal discussion. When asked the reason, Bohr said, ‘only him can give me some different ideas, only him dare point out my errors.’ (I paraphrased) So, we can see, how important different opinions are to get new knowledge.

Especially in scientific world, different opinions are quite appreciated. When ‘Black body radiation’ problem encountered great difficulties, when scientists found no way in classic physics to solve that problem, it’s Planck who first suggested energy quanta, which nobody agreed with. But finally, the proposal of Planck intrigued the quantum revolution in physics. Not only in physics, in any scientific fields, different opinions are always the keys of new knowledge. Of course not all different opinions are right, but at least they provide a new position to think about the things.

But if one always has to argue with the dissenters, it’s quite annoying. People hold different opinions can make us know the inadequateness of ourselves, while those who have the same opinions with us help us learn more. The supporters of our views is also important. Firstly, discussing with them will inspire one think more deeply about the question; and they will supplement the ideas one get. Secondly, it’s unimaginable that a dissenter will help you to continue your study or learning. Only those who think you are right are likely to give you necessary help, and confidence to insist your opinions. If more people understood Boltzmann at that time, more people gave him support, this great physicist, the founder of statistical physics, would not end his life tragedily by suicide. Again It’s not surprising that Einstein didn’t get Nobel Prize for his Relativity theory, because nobody understood him then.

As a summary, to get new knowledge, supporters and dissenters of our views are both necessary, both inplaceable, for supporters understand us, give us support and confidence which help the further learning, while dissenters discover the inadequateness of our view, or give some new ideas, which help broaden the knowledge of ourselves.

Issue1

"We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress an inhibit learning."

Different people have different styles of making friends. Some keep contact only with friends who share views with themselves, others would rather make friends with people who hold different opinions. (这个铺垫既显得绝对:非此即彼的感觉,又似乎与主题相关不大:跟交朋友没关系)From people who share our views, we can get confidence which help learning, while from those who disagree with us, we get the other thoughts beyond our brain(有这样表达的吗?contrary to our views), which help broaden our knowledge.

There is a famous story about the great physicists Bohr and Feynman. When Feynman was still a new guy(我不敢肯定这样用不可以,但是觉得不正式)/fledgling in scientific world, Bohr was already an authority in quantum mechanics. One day Bohr went to Feynman’s university to give a speech,(a completed sentence, maybe you should use . or ;) during the speech, all the responses to Bohr’s work were positive; but Feynman, at the end of the speech, stood up, (maybe you should replace this ‘,’ with ‘and’)pointed out some errors in the speech, then argued with Bohr. The second time Bohr went to America, he refused many celebrity’s invitation but invited Feynman (not famous at that time yet) for personal discussion. When asked the reason, Bohr said, ‘only him can give me some different ideas, only him dare point out my errors.’ (I paraphrased) So, we can see,(不要这个逗号,不是插入成分) how important different opinions are to get new knowledge.(上面一段论述根本没有支持这个观点,要指出Feynman的建议对Bohr的研究有什么具体贡献)

Especially(原本就是在说科学领域的事,especially得没有道理) in scientific world, differet opinions are quite appreciated. When ‘Black body radiation’ problem encountered great difficulties(problem encounter difficulty? Research encounter difficulty?), when scientists found no way in classic physics to solve that problem, it’s Planck who first suggested energy quanta, which nobody agreed with. But finally, the proposal of Planck intrigued the quantum revolution in physics. Not only in physics, (but) in any scientific fields, different opinions are always the keys of new knowledge. Of course not all different opinions are right, but at least they provide a new (prospect of investment) position to think about the things.

But if one always has to argue with the dissenters, it’s quite annoying.(建议不要这句,首先与下文无关,其次,annoying让人觉得作者接收不了不同意见.第二句作为过渡就可以了.)People hold different opinions can make us know the inadequateness of ourselves, while those who have the same opinions with us help us learn more. The supporters of our views is(are) also important. Firstly, discussing with them will inspire one think more deeply about the question; and they will supplement the ideas one get(hold, 新东方老师建议最好少用get, make, take这类抽象动词,考场上想不出具体的词不得已才用). Secondly, it’s unimaginable that a dissenter will help you to continue your study or learning.(与上文的观点不是正好矛盾吗?说的委婉一点,别绝对化了:unimaginable, only) Only those who think you are right are likely to give you necessary help, and confidence to insist your opinions. If more people understood Boltzmann at that time, more people gave him support, this great physicist, the founder of statistical physics, would not end his life tragedily(tragically) by suicide. Again It’s(it’s) not surprising that Einstein didn’t get Nobel Prize for his Relativity theory, because nobody understood him then.(这段中的几个例子跟学习无关,不过我也没有什么好例子. )

As a summary, to get new knowledge, supporters and dissenters of our views are both necessary, both inplaceable(indispensable), for supporters understand us, give us support and confidence which help the further learning, while dissenters discover the inadequateness of our view, or give some new ideas, which help broaden the knowledge of ourselves(ours).
