To understand a society, it is important to study its major cities.
The statement is trying to build up the connection between major cities in a nation with its representative characteristics. For studying a nation, they are some questions for researchers to think about. Economically, scientists need to know the economic system of this society. For example, is this nation an agricultural national or it depends on industry? What is the main economic source of this nation and furthermore, what is the main economic support for most of its people. How much total income that this nation earns every year and how much could an individual earn every year. Socially, it is essential for researchers to find out the basic social background of this nation, such as the general population and area of this nation. The medical system and education system are two major parts in the social parts for researchers to figure out. Politically, scientists are supposed to understand the political system of this nation. At the mean time, cultural actors are another part that can't be ignored. In general, a society is made up by several factors and it is complicated concept.
The statement attempts to illustrate the relationship between the studying major cities with understanding a society. The statement points out that by studying major cities that researchers are able to know more about a society, a nation. It is true that major cities represent some major characteristics of its society. Major cities generally are the economic and political centers. Government would like to invest those cities more than any other cities. Thus, major cities would have more opportunities for people to work. Also, because the better educational and medical system of major cities, more people are attracted into major cities for better life. More population is another reason that those cities are representative.
However, it would be problematic for researchers to study solely cities. Some major cities can't represent the main social problems. For example, Hong Kong is one of the major cities for China. Since late 1990, Hong Kong has become the economic center not only for China, but also for the Asia. The interaction between mainland and Hong Kong are influencing both sides of China. However, Hong Kong can't represent China's characteristics. First, Hong Kong is using different language. Because of the historical factors, people in Hong Kong are not used to speak mandarin. Instead, they prefer Cantonese and English, which the mandatory language in China is mandarin.
Second, the different political system makes HongKong distinctive. According to the policy made in 1997, Hong Kong has its own political system and its own local laws, which is based on the Basic Laws of mainland. This means that Hong Kong share certain power to decide their local issues without the permission of central government. Other local government in mainland China are not allowed to do so.
Third, the difference culture of Hong Kong is another reason that it can't represent China. Before reunion of Hong Kong, it has been dominated by Britain for nearly a century. People were getting used to Britain culture already. Even now, people in Hong Kong would like have teatime in afternoon with their friends and family, drinking tea and eating some cakes, while people in mainland don't have this habit at all.
The research methods will also affect the outcome of study. The general means of studying the society is conducting survey. Thus it matters a lot that how those scientists conduct the survey. For example, in a major city, it is partial for scientists to survey the people in upper class. In order to gain a complete and impartial data, scientists should look for answers in different class. The diversity of survey population is important. For example, this survey should include people holding different positions, like businessmen, professors or workers, people at different age, like elders and also children, and people in different gender.
To sum up, major cities are important for scientists to study, but they should also realize that some major cities are not representative and other cities can't be ignored. Conducting survey in several diverse cities with reliable means would help scientists understand a society objectively.
