Humanity has made little real progress over the past century or so. Technological innovations have taken place, but the overall condition of humanity is no better. War, violence and poverty are still with us. Technology cannot change the condition of humanity.


Humanity, one of the attributions of human beings, has been discussed by philosophers, socialists, anthropologists and psychologists etc., none of whom has reached a satisfactory answer so far. However, it is agreed by all that with the advent of civilization the humanity has been constantly making progress, although some problems, such as war, poverty and unemployment never disappear. Therefore, in my view, the speaker's assertion seems too absolute, and doesn't carry much weight.

First of all, the progress in science and technology does great contributions to the development of civilization, which is embodied by the improvement in the humanity, in that Science is the most favorable factor in determining the level, on which a civilization has developed. For example, there were more battles in ancient times than in modern times. It is not only because the progress in humanity which regard violence as the most foolish and wildest ways to solve the issues, but also because the development in science and technology makes the ways of communication diverse and effective, so that people may have more alternatives for communication when having conflicts. In a word, humanity and technology are just like the two hands of a human being, none of which can be cut off.

On the contrary, not all the advancement in science and technology betters humanity. For example, the invention of nuclear weapons used to defend rather than attack. However, it has become the threaten to those countries that lacks nuclear weapons, which would inevitable lead to the gap, then conflicts, or even wars, between the nations. Admittedly, the purpose of all the technological innovations aims at improving the quality of people's life and to strengthen the power of a nation. Nevertheless, when the results come into being, they may not be as satisfied as people imagined. What we have to do is to reduce the negative effects to the greatest degree, so that the progress of technology can serve human beings more effectively.

However, humanity and technology are not mutually exclusive. Therefore, fortunately it is totally possible to reconcile the two in order to serve the society more accordingly. Although not all the progress seem positive, such as nuclear weapons, air pollution, and cyber crimes, etc., in the whole humanity has been enjoying the fruits of technology, or we would have lived in a aboriginal and violent world where humanity is just an illusion. The belief remains that for every problem there is a solution by the combination of humanity and technology gives us optimism, and that is where the spirit of humanity really lies. The Second World War is a case cited often. All the people who stood for the justice in the war, held the belief that evil will be defeated and die out eventually as long as they kept on fighting, and meanwhile, technological progress had played so crucial role in the war, which can be best illustrated the two atomic bombs bursting in Japan. Thus, the perfect combination of humanity and technology can lead to the ultimate success, in that both of them are of the same importance.
   
In summary, humanity is doubtlessly improving in the process of the development of the technology. Although the innovations of technology sometimes may lead to negative results, it is the belief in brighter future that gives us optimism. Advanced technology serves as the tools, with which we can more fully and effectively improve ourselves, while the progress in humanity is the resource of technological development.

我对humanity也很confused的说，不过后来我把把它理解成为“人性”
我不是学哲学的，所以也说不太清楚“人性”到底意味着什么，大概就是那个“人之初，性本善＂当中的人性吧
不知各位有何高见？

嗯，其实我也说不太清楚，当时也有往人文方面理解，正好和科技technology对应，但是，正如你说，人文与什么war, violence,这些关系就远了些，于是我就又往人性方面想，所以写的时候，难免会将这两个概念混淆。
据说这个是二月的高频题，不写不行啊～～～万一中标的话，也好有个心理准备啊～～～～
