"The goal of politics should not be the pursuit of an ideal, but rather the search for common ground and reasonable consensus."
政治的目标不应该是追求一个想法，而是寻找普遍合理的大多数人的意见

My article:

In this short statement, the author has over simplified the function of politics. In fact, politics is such a concept that, on the road of pursuing certain ideal, it searches for common ground and reasonable consensus between various groups of people with different interests, backgrounds and faith.

Generally speaking, each society has its own ideals and especially for modern societies, their final targets are approximately the same-freedom, democracy, wealth, health, peach and justice. In order to achieve these pursuits, the democratic society and the public need the powerful government to lead them to final success. Whereas, the politics just represent the governmental behaviors as a whole. That is to say, the ideals of a certain society are just the ones of the politics. For example, in a poor and undeveloped country, people struggle to live a happier life all the day and the dream of such a society is wealth and happy. Then the political leaders in government should exert to help and direct the public toward the ideal. Or in a country of long-lasting war, ideals of all people are peach, stabilization and no dying. Therefore, such a country's politics should focus on ending up wars and build up a steady nation. In a word, people cannot simply depart politics from the ideals of the public. Politics has its own ideal- the one held by its people.

However, people must admit that in society, people from different backgrounds have diverse views toward the same thing. So confliction and contradiction cannot be avoided and neglected. If without proper solution, these wild differences may deteriorate into hostility or even animosity then there will be the risks of uncontrollable results. Therefore political leaders should hold the capacity of searching for common ground and reasonable consensus. This capacity is the basis of the stabilization and lasting development of a society. Here people can analyze such a system of the policy of the general election in American. During the election, the candidates from the Republican Party and the Democratic Party quarrel and debate with each other or censure, even traduce the drawbacks of the opposite. Sometimes they even forge or find out some scandals that can never be validated in order to win the support from the public and finally the leadership of the whole country. However, once the new president takes no an appointment, the terrible trend will end up immediately, for he represents not only the interests of the Party of his own but also the benefit of the whole country, of course, undoubtedly including the opposite Party. Then, this new president will exert to reconcile the conflicts sharpened by the election and unite all the positive powers to work for the whole American people. Also, in the four or eight years of his coming into power, other contradiction between the people who come from different interests groups can dominant the society, then his responsibility is to lead them to the common pursuits--the ideal of American society and politics: freedom and equality.

To sum up, the final ideal of politics and the function of politics are not necessarily conflicting. The complicacy of such issue decides the fact that at the basis of insisting on certain ideal, politics should possess the agility to lead its people toward the brighter future. (548 words)

我对此文的理解：
1．        蛮深奥的题目，你的切入点很新颖：政治是在追求一个ideal的同时，符合大众的common ground and reasonable consensus。
2．        第一段：公众的理想VS政治，不同社会的公众都有自己的ideal，而政治要满足这个ideal。但是你在文中又提到pursue the ideal 也是政治的一部分，二者不可分。就显得不是很切题。第二段有点不知所云，例子也很牵强。
3．        结尾突然提到ideal 和function的关系，前面似乎没有阐述。
总的感觉是上下文关系不连贯。
政治的问题一般都很头痛，此题：什么是ideal of politics? 它与common ground and reasonable consensus 有什么关系？
1.        freedom, quality, peace, 都可以是political ideal. 记得有写此文的举Washington, Gandhi and Martin Luther King. 他们为了freedom of motherland, human rights(ideal)奋斗而取得伟大成就。
2.        如smallpony 所述ideal 与consensus并不矛盾。但是也不排除矛盾的情况： 1942美国被迫对日宣战，通过战争而非和平手段来解决问题。当时的consensus是要打，但是破坏了peace(ideal之一)。自己觉得此例很不合适，大家有什么意见，好的例子？
