Issue 64 人类智慧和机器智慧
The human mind will always be superior to machines because machines are only tools of human minds.
词汇:Reciprocating movement, shuttle commuting, woeful, artificial intelligence. gadget, bronze.
Complacent, carefree, lighthearted, insouciant, consensus, lucid.
The speaker seems too assertive on this point that other people may disagree with him. They feel worried and pressured by being inferior and possibly enslaved by machines one day. However, in my view, there is no need to be so glum and pessimistic over development of science. On the other hand, we cannot be complacent on this worry as well. What we should do is to contain machine development in our capable hands and lucid minds.
Many people feel worried about being inferior to machines one day. I believe such negative thinking is reasonable. If we retrospect the past three centuries, none of periods with the same length in human history witnessed as great development as the past three hundred years did. Starting from the Industry Revolution to current day, machines with abilities of simple reciprocating movement have evolved into an incredible degree that they have possessed artificial intelligence. Their capacity to calculate the volume of the Sun or automatic implementation of shuttle commuting has made many people feel woeful. Indeed, they are able to achieve a great deal of things that human’s abilities are short of. For another thing, the fact that many people have been enslaved by machines in current day exacerbates such concern. The Internet, the telephone and the computer games have people hole themselves declining any opportunity to go outside and start a chat with others. Machines become their pillars in their daily life.
In stark contrast to the people who concern, others are much more insouciant about this. After all, it is human beings that created these gadgets in the first place, so in this sense we are like their parents that they must show obedience. In addition, they have nothing different from stones, steels and bronze having been applied by our predecessors. The only difference is that those simple implements are used by hands, but the intelligent machines are handled by program. We input codes we want like orders to soldiers. We have reason to be relaxed when treating technology. As long as they those gadgets never own the free thinking as we humans do and they are not coded by some types of freaks to be against human being, then we are safe.
It is sure to say that those people who are agonized by the problem of inferiority are amusing. Machines have granted us unprecedented productivity which imparts us incredible living standards we have today. Any attempt to be back to ages ago is wrong and timid. We cannot glorify the benefits we have possessed already at the same time vilify the possible risks. For another thing, neither can governments feel too carefree about developing science. These machines have the possibility to be as immoral and antagonistic as what clone is. So governments should reach consensus on this problems that any classified science or any technology projects that are related to public welfare must be contained in their capable hands. And any effort to report about process of some unclassified technologies should not be degraded as out of order. After all, measures combining the public monitoring with the authority one can display the most power.
