With the fabulously rapid development in both science and humanity, things have become more and more complex and puzzled than in the past. In this case, some people may argue that looking back for an understanding of the past is of little value in guiding contemporary life. However, I hold that we can still benefit a lot from retrospect to the past, as the past is like a mirror, in which present, even future can be seen. (这句写的真好,羡慕ing)
On one hand, looking back to the past may give individuals the examples of success. When we are making some decision, we usually tend to refer to(我感觉用resort to更好一些) the successful experience in the past. As no one could predict future exactly, the past is the best reference to guide the present affairs. Take McDonald’s company for instance, once the company plans to sell a new type of hamburgers, it usually does a comprehensive research on the market of the products started a few months ago, for the past sales, especially the satisfied(satisfying吧?) ones, are the best reflection of the market trend, from which the company can work out its later plan. Therefore, to ensure the success in the future, one has to turn to the past for experiences and lessons, since the past is the best reference and predict of the future.
On the other hand, retrospect the past will help us avoid to(还是去掉这个to吧) repeating mistakes. Failure in the past tends to stay in our minds for a long time, which will remind us of the mistakes when we are confronted with the same situations. For example, when we committed a mistake in the exams, which finally resulted in a dissatisfied mark, we may regret it for a long time. According to a survey conducted by several socialists in Greenwich University in Britain, once we remember the former mistakes by heart, the rate of committing the same mistakes will be decreased by over 50 percent. In a word, the lessons in the past reminds people of their carelessness and ignorance, and then motivates them to improve themselves and never do the same in the future.
When studying the past, however, we have to keep a critical thinking, for the society changes so fast that the experiences in the past is very likely to be out of date. It is widely accepted that the rapid development in network technology and mass media makes the world changing every second. Only studying the past is doubtlessly insufficient in the contemporary society, in which increasing new kinds of knowledge come into being ceaselessly. The failure of Sumsong Company’s plan to occupy the European market is a good lesson. After its past success in Asian market, the company ignores the difference between European and Asian consumers and merely copies the strategy for the Asian market when manage the European market. Consequently, the duplication of the former experience cost the company a big sum of money. Thus to satisfy the needs of the society, one should learn the past reasonably, by absorbing what can be utilized today and throwing away what has been out of date. Only in this way can the value of the past fully be displayed.
On balance, looking for the past is of great significance, for it records the examples of both success and failure. By studying it we can learn the keys to success and lessons of failure. However, if too indulged in the past, we can never advance any further, or even worse, move backwards. In a word, studying the past may not guarantee the success, but the pay-off will be worth the efforts.
