Application Review Update
This is the fifth message I have sent to you all as a group to keep you informed about our application review process. If you did not receive the prior emails,  please let me know and I will send you copies.

As of today we have received 920 applications for our LL.M. Program and 845 of them are now complete. Our Graduate Studies Committee has reviewed all of the completed applications except for a few which became complete this past week.

This weekend is a busy social period for our current LL.M. and J.S.D. students. Last night our students from China hosted a Lunar New Year/Spring Festival party for everyone in the two programs and friends in the J.D. Program. This was one in a series of national parties arranged throughout the year by our students from various parts of the world. The Law School provides a financial subsidy for each of these events. Based on the food prepared by our students last night, I would be inclined to have only Chinese students in the program next year if they agreed to feed us on a regular basis! Don’t worry; that is not going to happen.  为此多考虑下中国学生吧。

This new year is the Year of the Horse in the Chinese calendar and that ties in with the second activity for our students this weekend. Two of our professors – Saul Levmore and Julie Roin – will host their annual Super Bowl party tomorrow for our LL.M. and J.S.D. students. As some of you may know, the Super Bowl is the championship game at the end of our professional American football season and is usually the most watched television event of the year. Think of it as the final match in the World Cup but with more commercials and more action! I suspect that many of you who are soccer (what the rest of the world calls “football”) fans would strongly disagree with that last comment. In any case, the two teams competing in the Super Bowl this year are the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos. Since a “bronco” is an untrained horse, a wager on Denver may be the way to go this year.

Application Decision Messages Coming Next Week
I am pleased to report that I will be sending email decisions for completed applications at around 3:00 p.m. (15:00) on Friday, February 7. Please note that this is the date and time in Chicago, so you will have to adjust for your time zone. We may be able to send the messages a bit earlier, but I don’t want to promise that. If you currently have a completed application to Chicago and don’t receive a message from me by the end of the day on February 7, please send me a message.

Please understand that if your application is now complete, it is too late to add any additional information until after decisions have been sent out.

There will be three types of messages: admission, the Standby  Group (waiting list), and deny. Each type of message will have an attached statement which you should read carefully. Note that in my individual messages I will ask admitted applicants and Standby Group applicants to send me back a brief email message confirming that they have received and read both the decision message and the attached statement.

Candidates who are offered admission will be given an initial response deadline of April 15. We do not ask for a money deposit but we do ask candidates to give detailed, honest  descriptions of their situations. We have found this system to be very useful. It will be fully described with our offer of admission. Applicants offered places in the Standby Group will be asked to let me know whether they wish to receive further consideration by our Graduate Studies Committee.

There are 75 applications which are still incomplete. As soon as we receive the missing material for those applications, I will notify those applicants that their files are complete and have been submitted to our Graduate Studies Committee for review. Based upon our experience in recent years, the Graduate Studies Committee has set aside a number of places in the class for candidates who may be offered admission from this group.

This year’s applicant pool is the strongest we have ever seen. How do we know that? Unlike the world of J.D. admissions where there is a common standardized test (LSAT) taken by all applicants and a common grade point average system applied to all academic records, there are no common qualitative statistical factors we can use to compare LL.M. applicant pools from year to year. What we can do, however,  is to look at the results of all the individual decisions made on the applications after they have been initially reviewed by the Graduate Studies Committee. This was the first step of the application review process I described in the message I sent to you in late December. We are now in the midst of the second phase of the process – looking at all the decisions as a group to put together a diverse class. This year’s group of candidates initially admitted by the Committee is substantially larger than any prior year’s group – an indication of the overall quality of the pool. Since we do not want to increase the current size of our LL.M. Program (70 students), we are now dealing with the difficult task of selecting which members of this very talented pool we will actually offer admission.

This is the last message I will send to you all as a group. I want to thank you for your patience as we have reviewed your applications. You have honored us by indicating that you want to be part of our community during the 2014-2015 academic year and we wish that we could offer more of you the chance to join us in September.
