12"People's attitudes are determined more by their immediate situation or surroundings than by any internal characteristic."
The speaker asserts that people's attitudes are determined more by their immediate situation or surroundings than by any internal characteristic. At first glance, the assertion seems reasonable, for a society always tries to make its people live in a good situation and surroundings. But I fundamentally disagree with the assertion for following reasons.
First, when faced with similar or same situations, different people usually make different choices. For example, we often read reports about some taxi drivers who hand in the wallet lost by other people on a taxi, and try to find the owner. However, there are also many taxi drivers who just keep the wallet lost by others for themselves. Although these drivers are in a similar situation with above drivers, since they all drive a taxi alone and have many opportunities to handle others' wallet as they wish, they make different choices. Why? The main reason is because their internal characteristics are different. When an honest driver finds a wallet lost by others, he will think that the owner of the wallet must be very anxious to get back his wallet, and he should return the wallet to the owner, and then he does so. In contrast, when a dishonest driver notices a wallet lost by his passenger, he might think that he is lucky and begin to wonder how much money is in it. Consequently, he will probably keep the wallet for himself. In a word, internal characteristics mainly determine people’s attitude and their behavior when they are in similar situations.
Second, there are many people who hold the same attitude toward money regardless situation or surroundings. For instance, some misers are so stingy about his fortune that they will keep their money no matter how much money they own. When they are poor, it is easy to understand why they are so economical. Nevertheless, when they become very rich, they are still as stingy about their money as before. The best explanation to such phenomena is probably because they are inherent misers and covetous about money from bottom of their heart.
Admittedly, immediate situation and surroundings sometimes do influence some people's attitude. For example, some taxi driver may sometimes turn in the wallet lost by others and at other times keep it for himself according to how much money is in it. But this is not only due to the situation, but also due to the dishonesty of the driver. If these drivers are truly honest, they will turn in whatever they pick up.
On the other hand, although internal characteristic is the most important for people's attitude, such characteristics can be cultivated by good education and surroundings. But the cultivation is not an easy and short-term task, but a difficult and long-term mission, because people have some inertia, and such inertia can only be changed little by little.
To sum up, people's attitudes are mostly determined by people's internal characteristic, and such characteristic can be cultivated by a long-term education and good surroundings. Therefore, we should emphasize education to the whole society and try to make all people have correct attitudes. |
