84."In any field of endeavor, it is impossible to make a significant contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field."
What is the essential condition for people to make significant contribution in their fields? This is a widespread issue, concerning which some claim that it is impossible for people to attain success and make meaningful contributions if they are not strongly influenced by the achievements of past people in this field. I agree that people must learn from the past achievements which have been the base for further researches, whereas, in my view, people can not neglect endeavors and innovations by themselves.
To begin with, the achievements which have been attained by past people are the absolutely necessary bases of research for people subsequently in the field. The advancements of any field always come into being step by step, and any progress is often made by effort of many people for a long time, even hundreds years. Therefore, any person, whether famous or not, can not independently attain success, and any research must base on the past achievements. To illustrate the point clearly, here is a persuasive example. There exist many nuclear power plants in the world now, and they supply the majority of electric power in many countries such as Japan and France. The development of the new type of power plant owe to Einstein Albert who formed a theoretical base for the exploitation of atomic. And the contribution of Einstein also base on the research of earlier people such as Bohr who won Nobel Prize for investigating atomic structure and radiations. Without the knowledge attained by every progress as the base of study, nobody can make a significant contribution.
Moreover, people can be inspired and learn many experiences from the process of attaining achievements. No only the knowledge but also the experiences, whether inspiring or not, which attained from the past achievements are important for people to have further research. To get the achievements, people often go through a long and treacherous process. The great spirits that people conquer the difficulties which once are regarded as impassable will inspire the people who are in the face of problems. Also, learning from the past achievements, people will not make the same mistakes which at one time lead the researchers astray in the process of study. A doctor in my school who win a national prize often says (and I paraphrase):"It is very important for us researchers to learn from the past successes of others in the field to get the inspirations and experiences which will benefit our study very much."
However, in order to make significant contribution, people must have endeavors and innovations in the study, and it is wrong to only rely on the past achievements. There is an old Chinese sentence- only dawdler will sleep lying on the achievements of others. This means that any person should not only be influenced by past achievements but also be creative and have efforts. Without the innovations, the new progresses which advance the world in its field can not be made, without the efforts, the problems unceasingly arising will not be solved and encumber the study.
To sum up, people must have a right attitude towards past achievements. When people want to have some further researches in the field, it is very important to learn from the past achievements which has been the base of the study and can bring people meaningful inspirations and experiences. Nevertheless, people should have their endeavors and innovations, not only rely on the past achievements. In this way, it is possible for people to make significant contributions, and thus the world will advance ceaselessly. |
