"It is primarily through identification through social groups that we define ourselves."

2004-3-1        21:42 – 22:50

I basically agree with this statement that people define themselves mainly by identifying in different social groups for three reasons. Firstly, human beings need comparisons to other people for reference; otherwise, we cannot know what we look like exactly. Secondly, it is the various social groups that provide us places to meet with people holding distinct values and to find out the differences among the others and ourselves. Finally, it is the instinctive need of belonging for everyone, no matter you are conscious about it or not.

As for the first reason, when people want to define objects, including themselves, we need reference to other counterparts to attain a specific cognition. By the same token, if we think isolatedly, we may have difficulty in grasping the true characters of objects; instead, we will end up with a vague feeling about the targets. Consider, for instance, when a Yorkshire child defines icecream to be cold while apple puddings hot, he/she draws the conclusion by eating the traditional pudding with icecream on it. It is the comparison of the different feelings about the two foods that helps the child to define exactly the two different things. Likewise, we define ourselves to be optimistic compared to somebody who is pessimistic while we are cautious compared to someone who is careless.

Then, it comes to the second reason that social groups provide us the places for people to meet with each other and find out both similarities as well as differences between oneself and the others.  As stated above, we need comparison for reference to define something specifically. To achieve this goal, what we need is a platform to contact with others. And the existence of various social groups is playing such a role as the bridge to communicate different people in the society. It is the very place where people can know the things outside of their own world, besides, engage in introspection, through which people can not only define themselves more accurately but also modify their definitions to reach a fuller, and sounder level.

Admittedly, there is always someone who drifts at the edge of the society. Those people encage themselves in their own world, partly because of the introversive personality while partly due to their unique thoughts. For example, when Einstein promoted his theory of relativity, no one could understand him at that time. However, for general people, we cannot deny it is the instinctive need for us to be in certain groups. As Abraham Maslow pointed out, belonging need is in the middle of his hierarchy of needs for the reason that it is essential for people to attain a certain amount of affectionate relationships and even a sense of community, which is the important way to relieve our worries for loneliness and social anxieties.

In the final analysis, from the above reasons: request for comparison for reference, places for people to communicate and introspect, and the instinctive of belonging need, we can reach the conclusion that it is primarily through identification through social groups that we define ourselves.

In the final analysis, from the above reasons: request for comparison for reference, places for people to communicate and introspect内省? INSTINCT of belonging need, we can reach the conclusion that it is primarily through identification through social groups that we define ourselves.
