Issue 164: “Sometimes imagination is a more valuable asset than experience. People who lack the experience are free to imagine what is possible and thus can approach a task without constraints of established habits and attitudes.”
Is imagination a more valuable asset than experience? I concede that people who are constrained with much established attitude is bound to be less creative than those who are not. However, I fundamentally disagree with the speaker's claim in that it overlooked the relationship between imagination and experience. These two interact interdependently. Thus, they are of equal importance.
On the one hand, experience is a prerequisite of imagination. Common sense informs us it is impossible to imagine in the first place without at least some experience. How could one be free to imagine what is possible and thus approach a task without experience, as the speaker contends, if it is even not possible? For supporting examples, one needs look no further than the fictional movies. In today's science fictional movies, the monsters of outer space often share some characteristics with creatures that can be easily seen in daily life, such as ants, birds or whales. This indicates that the producer of the movie uses accessible animals as archetypes to liven the fictional world. In other words, the imaginary world, though may not exist, relies on the real world.
On the other hand, experience is often concluded with more or less imagination. This is especially true when it comes to scientific research. Lacking imagination, scientific data are merely some numbers or descriptions of experiments. As a mathematician said: "Science is built with facts, just as a house is built with bricks. But a collection of facts cannot be called science any more than a pile of bricks can be called a house." As can learn form this remark, science needs imagination as cement to form internally logically coherent theory with seemingly unconnected facts. For instance, G.J.Mendel use the statistics acquired form his pea experiments to explain how and why some biochemical traits could be inherited from first generation to filial generations while other traits not. He established a theory in which factors(defined as genes later) in DNA are to determine the filial peas’ color(and other characteristics as well). Although it was not likely for him to detect what gene actually is, his explanation made possible the modern investigation about gene. As a result, it is careful and creative imagination that makes a heap of peas to form a reasonable and contributive theory.
As to fulfill a task, one needs to find a balance between imagination and experience, because we put ourselves in peril by ignoring either. Acquiring basic laws and knowledge is the first step because no one can hope to solve a problem without at least a basic understanding of it. Experiences are necessary in order to allow people to have a clear perception in mind and know where the problem lies. Yet, it is equally important to keep challenging and creative thinking during the entire process. Experiences are, if not always, misleading either because they may be out-of-date or they might be a mistake at first. With the innovation of new technology, people should be inspired to rethink and refine our old method.
On balance, the most effective way is to combine imagination and experience together so as to fulfill a task perfectly.
To sum up, while constrained thinker often imprison their thoughts and thus less likely to achieve great success, pure imagination, if it occurs at all, merely serves to dilute the truth, credibility and cohesion of any task.
