issue176"The function of science is to reassure; the purpose of art is to upset. Therein lies the value of each."
The speaker claims that the function of science is to reassure, while the purpose of art is to upset. In my view, this conclusion is over generalized. Both science and art can reassure and upset, and it depends on whether the discovery of science and works of art have an severe impact on people accepting it.
First of all, consider the area of science. The primary function should be to explore the unknowns and to pursue the axiom of the universe. In fact, science might function as reassurance to people. The principles and theories of physics that unifying the universe into a whole reassure people for we can understand the world in a more simple way. But if new scientific discoveries conflict with people's former ideas, it is very likely that science cause an upsetting effect. The notions that the sun is at the center of the solar system, that people evolved from the primate forms, and time is relative to space and motion, are all examples that science might disconcert people. In fact, it is the innovative ideas that might upset people, for the reason that they are quite different from people's rooted ideas in mind, causing confusion in the mass. In contrast, those theories or principles that comes generally from logical reasoning are more likely to reassure people. And there is another case that people might be upset by the modern science, such as those researches about nuclear energy, or clone. They fear that these kinds of research might bring them with the scene of nightmare like that of Frankenstein. From both the cases that people are upset by science, we find that it is whether the scientific researches or discoveries stimulate people’s strong feelings counts.
As to art, it is also easy to find that both genres exist. The purpose of art is to reflect people's feeling about beauty and ugliness, kindness and wickedness, and many other things in the world, through artists' masterpieces. Whether the works of art upset or reassure is dependent on the creator's feeling creating the work. This is because artists' feeling can infect the observers and listeners easily, thus cause a resonance. The frescos of Fra Angelico and other monks and nuns of late medieval period, reassure people by messages of Christian redemption and salvation. This reflects the artists' soothing state at that time, living in world of mildness. People are easily to be susceptible to the feeling imparted by the artists. While Renaissance art focuses on other Christian images and themes----especially those involving crucifixion and apocalyptic notions of judgment and damnation----which are clearly upsetting and disconcerting, not reassuring. This stimulates people's frantic worship toward Christ. The field of music is more or less the same. Beethoven's Symphony 5 upsets listeners for its intensive impact to people's heart. People are impressed by the violent melody indicating the artist's strong will and volition to struggle with fate. In contrast, the light music, especially those lullabies, relax listeners' nervous mind. This feeling probably comes from artists' released and soothing state.
To sum up, whether to science or art, the function can be both reassuring and upsetting. It depends on whether the scientific discoveries and works of art stimulate people's intensive feelings of excitement, longing, horror and others formerly latent in heart, or just relax and soothe people's strained nervous system.
