People hold wildly different opinions regarding to the question whether children should learn foreign languages at primary school. Some argue that young children have special talents for language learning, while the others assert that parents and teachers should relieve students' burdens, and give them more time to play with their peers. In my opinion, the most important thing about children schooling is the cultivation of their interests in foreign cultures rather than memorising words and grammars.
Undeniably, those who contend that primary school students could learn foreign languages more effciently than secondary school students are right. According to a recent scientific report, young children could memorise more words than adults for a same period, and they could write those words down more accuratly three days later. Another advantage of language learning at primary schools is that in this way students at secondary schools have more time to acquire knowledges, instead of spending a large proportion of their time on memorising words.
So it is undeniable that learning foreign languages at primary schools has its advantage, but parents and schools should also try to avoid the inherent disadvantages of this practice. First of all, too complicated language environment may be confusing to young children.Switching between two distinctly unlinked languages is definitely difficult for young children who is trying hard to understand his mother language. And another important thing parents and teachers should pay close attention to is to make foreign language learning interesting and motivating. This is the key to successful foreign language learning.Teachers should avoid forcing primary school students to memorize words, which is intolerably monotonous and frustrating, and may make young children lose further interest in language learning.
To conclude, regarding this issue,my view is that young children should learn foreign languages at primary school. In the mean time, teachers and parents should make language learning interesting. That is what primary school students need most.
