ISSUE90. "College students should be encouraged to pursue subjects that interest them rather than seek programs that promise entry into the job market."
1〉 许多学生迫于压力更关注于与工作有关的课程;
2〉 学科需要均衡发展,每个学科都有其重要性,尤其要注重培养学生对基础学科的兴趣;
College, a place equipping people with advanced knowledge and specialized skills, usually offer various courses for students and nowadays students can freely choose their favorite major. But unfortunately, many undergraduates seek programs that promise entry into the job market rather than according to their own interest, which was the original intention of the offer mentioned above. To rectify such trend, college students should be encouraged to pursue subjects that interest them.
The phenomenon that today’s students concern more on the relation between their learning and their future jobs itself should not be criticized too much, since few students follow such trend according to their own will. With the competition in job market becoming more and more drastic, students have to pay attention to their future more or less, especially his/her intention is just to lead a comfortable life which make a good job more important. The pressure is not only from inside, but also from outside. As a society changes as fast as ours, people become more pragmatic than they used to be, which in turn influence their next generations. Many students now concern much about how to manage their life after graduation, since house, car, medical, insurance, etc are all items that they must face inevitably. Thus, students surely have enough reasons to pursue programs that would benefit their searching job after graduation.
Though the phenomenon has its excuse to exist, educators should hold perspective that every discipline should be developed harmoniously and basic science should be seriously emphasized. Many students now pursuit popular majors such as computer science, electronic engineering, MBA, medicine, etc, which in turn cools down many basic disciplines. However, many natural and social science such as mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, anthropology, economics, etc, are the foundation of various disciplines including those popular ones. If educators neglect the importance of impartment of those basic sciences, society would surely lack the energy to advance in a few decades. If no one continues to research in basic science, which in fact needs more intellectuals to engage in, the improvement of most science and technology will slow down and finally cease. From this point of view, educators should try their best to encourage students who have interest in basic science to pursue their favorites.
Nevertheless, students whose majors are not popular ones are really needed while those who take popular subjects are not always welcome. As more and more graduates of popular majors appear in the job markets, the supply has overweighed the demand in some places and will continue to happen in other areas. On the other hand, graduates of others majors have more opportunities to choose. Furthermore, student who studies for his/her interest will have a lot of fun during further education such as entering graduate school. Unutterably pleasure would appear when a new phenomenon has been discovered or a novel theory has been found during research. Thereafter as a scholar, he would gain public deference that is invaluable.
In sum, for the reasonable construction of disciplines in our society and for helping students hold a appropriate view towards knowledge, educators should encourage students to pursue their interest rather than the public fashion.
MBA--economics,electronic engineering--physics,
