Issue133 "The problems of modern society have led many people to complain: 'We live in terrible times.' Yet, given the choice, no one today would prefer to live in any other time."

After careful and objective analysis about the issue whether we are living in a terrible world, I find my view principally consistent with the author's. Indubitably, now we are threatened by some serious problems that newly emerge. However, in my opinion, no one would choose to live in the past despite of presence of so much pressing problems in current time. Confronted with such confusing problems, we should take a positive attitude towards them instead of just complaining. In the following discussion, I will show my evidence to substantiate my view.

In the first place, we have to acknowledge that the development of the society has given birth to plenty of new problems we have never met. Now people are living with a more rapid pace than ever before, which is derivative of people’s strong desire for high efficiency, and thus are more liable to suffer the mental diseases related to the increasing stress. And as a result of the development of science and technology, people are enhanced in their ability to change their environment, however, much of the change has been conducted in the blind pursuit of short-term interest and has brought about many environmental problems, such as the air and water pollution, the depletion of the atmospheric ozone, over deforestation and so on. Now the natural environment is not as friendly to us as before, it begins to feed back some deleterious effect to our human being, for instance, the acid rain, the global warming, and the respiratory diseases. What’s even worse, with the conflicts between nations or organizations further aggravated, the horrible terrorism becomes more rampant and widely threatens the stability and prosperity of almost every country, in terms of hijacking, “body bomb”, etc.      
In the second place, however, comparing the simple life before with the current colorful one, no people would be willing to live in the past as far as I am concerned. Even though, the advancement of human society has put us into a series of troubles, the living condition of the people has been greatly improved. Clothes can be bought ready made, washing can go to the laundry, milk arrives at the doorstep, meals can be had at the restaurant. Undoubtedly, people now are living better than before. The normal people of the current can be able to enjoy what even the emperor in the past cannot dream of, such as the TV set, the computer, the Internet, and so on. The modern traffic system allow us to travel to a distant place in a very short time, while the instant communication system permit us to contact with who ever we want, no matter where he is, which make the earth seem to be like a village. Furthermore, people nowadays for the first time can live as equal ones in the society, act as the lord of his nation, and enjoy a variety of civil rights, all of which is characteristic of a democratic society.

In the final analysis, it is meaningless for us to just complain about the problems troubling us but wise for us to be aware of the ever presence of various problems in any period of the human society. In all periods of human society, we advances in the circulation of solving of the old problems and then discovering new ones, even if in the primitive society, when humankind is the most free to live, we are still troubled with the problem of struggling against the beasts and surviving. Therefore, realizing the prevalence of sorts of problems accompanying social development, it is praiseworthy and sensible of us to take a positive attitude that we have been so well equipped with the previous accumulation of knowledge and experience that we can manage to solve the problems blocking the way of our development, regardless of their growing difficulty and complexity
To sum up, I agree with the author with little reservation. Through the discussion mentioned above, We can easily reach the conclusion that now we are leading a better life than ever before, despite we have to face so many urgent new problems, it is greedy of us to complain the current life as terrible but necessary for us to shape a positive attitude towards them.
