Issue 68. People make the mistake of treating experts with suspicion and mistrust, no matter how valuable their contributions might be.

In nowadays society, people’s attitudes towards contributions and ideas of experts can be divided into two kinds: suspicion with critical thinking and passive acceptation. In my point of view, the former attitude is obviously more important than the latter in that when a person wants to recognize a problem, he/she would experience a process of suspicion and critics, and then contradict or accept it as his/her own.

Most of the contributions are made in a specific era that they can hardly afford solutions to nowadays problems. In every academic realm, authentic thinkers would examine the existed theories with their own situations, especially in scientific region. Many instances inform us that as time passes, most of the contributions, which seemed to be efficient, are actually fallacy due to the constraint of the knowledge and learning of their time. Take Aristotle as an example, no one would deny his contributions in natural science were accurate in his era, even the theories were considered as truth that can be lasted forever. But as researchers observed and experimented the phenomenon’s, most of his theories proved to be false. In nowadays-academic region, as information and technology augment in an astonishing speed, suspicious and unbelieving attitude towards contributions of experts is more essential than before.

What's more, even the contributions are proved to be efficient and accurate in one region, whether the idea would fit for the other regions is open to doubt. This discipline is essential to recognition and comprehension when searching for solutions in political and business domains. Take the Marxism as an example, Chinese government considers it as the supreme truth and many policies are enacted according to the theory. The increasing development of economic, industries as well as people’s life prove this theory is efficient and beneficial. But other nations have their own atmosphere and reality that politicians consider this theory with doubt and mistrust. In business realm, when managers are dealing with the complex circumstances of market, what theory can be afforded to their problems should be examined carefully; only obeying the stereotype, which seems accurate to other companies, would lead to failure

In colleges and universities, it is essential for a student to keep a suspicious attitude towards the contributions of the experts. Different from accepting the theories passively, suspicious and critical attitude is an actively one, in which it helps to cultivate a student an ability to ask questions, form recognitions, find flaws both of the theory and his/her own. As in my observation, almost every scientist has the ability to ask and the courage to contradict to the contributions of the others, owns to which, the science develops smoothly. For example, the third theory of genetics was form by Morgan, who held a suspicious attitude towards two theories of Mendel--the father of genetics, did lots of experiments on flies to prove Mendel's theories as falsehood. But sarcastically, his results not only proved the accuracy of Mendel but provided Morgan more inspiration to form his own theory. The course of recognition is based on critics and mistrusts, by which a student can turn the contributions of others into his/her own, disprove the fallacies, and inspire him/her with new information.

As a conclusion, suspicion and mistrust is important in the course of recognize and comprehend the contribution of the experts. With considering the various situations and era, people make decisions should according to specific situations that need serious question the validity and accuracy of the contributions.
