查了字典，支持 heretic。

heretic ：someone who believes or teaches something that goes against accepted or official beliefs
The church regards them as heretics.

ascetic：relating to or having a strict and simple way of living that avoids physical pleasure

我把ascetic 的意思记混了，以为有节约的意思。

Ascetic的存在是混淆视听用的。因为一般美国人看到monk都会想到ascetic. Ascetic是有节约的意思，但这里需要的词不是节约，而是和mainly because he directed his censure at the Church有关的词，或者说Zealot的近义词。Someone who criticized the Church in the 15th Century would be considered a "heretic," because the Church was considered to be right about everything.

这道题只要看mainly because he directed his censure at the church就可以做了，破折号是明显的补充说明的信号。在当时的背景下，在教会中censure不就是异端么。所以选heretic。同意楼上。
