Does deep conviction to an idea or policy necessarily makes people critical of it? The speaker contends so. According to my personal observation, I strongly agree with the speaker as it is this idea or policy that guides the followers, and consequently, it is necessary and important for them to know whether their belief is right. Thus, they naturally become the most critical of the idea or policy, sometimes even exclusive to other ideas except for them realm of science.

To begin with, almost every one has a policy or belief. In this world there are numerous religions that offers people their unique perspective to life and existence. People who belief in these religions spend a lot of their time perceiving the spirit of their belief by reading related books such as The Bible. Admittedly there do exist considerable amount of people who claim that they have no believes, the scientist and anarchist, for instance. However, they also have something that serves as their compass to guide or lead them, the spirit of science and anarchism, respectively. The above discussion aptly illustrates that most people have their believes and they show care about them a lot.

Secondly, as the idea and policy is given so many attentions by its followers, it is of great importance for them to make sure their believes are the right, sometimes the only one for them to adopt and adhere to. For those who have a certain religion, their way of ensure their believes to be correct is to establish the unshakeable icon of their God, and it is the God's job to make sure that their religion is the perfect one to commit to. A case in point is the sentence of Bruno. He believed that the earth is not the center of the universe, which is contrary to the idea believed by Romans of that time. As he challenged this widely held belief and insisted on his idea, at last he was sentenced to death in the name of offending the God. From this case we can see how critical do people adhere to believes, and in most cases their adherence are exclusive to different opinions.

In addition, being critical to one's belief or policy is not always exclusive to other opinions. Different from the situation in religion, those who believe in science are willing to accept different ideas and communicate in an open atmosphere. The reason is quite simple, science is not subjective as religions and the common mission of the scientists is to find out the truth, to which the way may be accompanied by debates and discussions. Commitment to the spirit of science requires the scientist to be willing to different ideas and to achieve the final goal with effort.

In sum, it is natural for people who are committed to certain ideas or policies to be critical of them to make sure they are thinking and behaving in a right way, also they will be exclusive to other ideas that offend their belief or their God except the scientists who believe discussion will benefit their commitment to their belief of science.

belief includes not mere religious one. scientific belief also belongs to that category

I mean that the scientific belief is different from the religious one, it is more a policy than belief. My categorization is like this : policy 1, religious ones which is always exclusive to other ideas, and that’s how their followers are critical of them; 2, non-religious ones which being critical of it does not necessarily exclude others’ ideas and policies.
