Although certain of his points were not made very clearly, and some of the audience seemed (i) _______ , Mr. Johnson felt quite (ii) _______with the result of his last-effort speech. Contrary to expectations, he (iii) _______the election.

Blank (i)

        disengaged

        forlorn

        fired up

Blank (ii)

        satisfied

        upset

        disappointed

Blank (iii)

        conceded

        clinched

        threw
官方解析
The word “although” is the biggest clue in the first sentence. One might generalize the first sentence as follows, “although something bad happened, and something else bad happened, Mr. Johnson felt good.” In blank (i), look for a word that has a negative spin, such as “dissatisfied.” In blank (ii), look for a word with a positive spin such as “happy.” Because Mr. Johnson was happy with the results, we can assume he won the election or at least did better than expected before the speech. In blank (iii) look for a word such as “won.”

Blank (i) filler: “dissatisfied”

(A) CORRECT. Disengaged means “mentally detached.” This is a good match because it makes sense that a politician would want to engage his audience.
(B) Forlorn means “lonely and miserable, hopeless.” While this does have the correct negative spin, it is too strong. Nothing in the sentence would suggest the audience is so desolate, just that they are not that into the speech.
(C) Fired up means “excited.” This is the opposite of our filler.

Blank (i) filler: “happy”

(D) CORRECT. Satisfied is the only answer choice with a positive spin.
(E) Upset has negative spin. We want positive spin.
(F) Disappointed also has negative spin. We want positive spin.

Blank (iii) filler: “won”

(G) Conceded means “admitted failure before the end.” This is the opposite of our filler word.
(H) CORRECT. Clinched means “settled something decisively in a positive way.” This is a perfect match to our filler word.
(I) Threw in this context means “lost intentionally.” There is nothing in this sentence to suggest he lost intentionally.
