issue99. "In any realm of life-whether academic, social, business, or political-the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."

在生活的各个领域-无论是学术、社会、商业还是政治-成功的唯一途径就是采取实际而并非理想化的观点。注重实效的行为确保生存,而理想化的观点倾向于被更简单、更直接的选择取代。
Nowadays it is so fashionable to emphasize productiveity ->productivities and results: if it works, adopt it, adapt it, and do it. Most people thereby worship pragmatism and believe that the only way to succeed is take[to take] the practical approach and that idealistic views are likely to be replaced by more immediate options. While I agree that pragmatic behavior is a must for survival and the key factor for realizing idealistic vision and dreams, there is a serious danger in this approach. The simple fact that something works does not make it right. Also, only focusing on the immediate effects might lead to a bigger failure in the future.
To begin with, the chief weakness of pragmatic approach lies in its overemphasis on the immediate effects. What is practical is defined by what works. What works is defined by the results we see right now, Apparently, what works does not necessarily mean that it is right. Consider, for instance, a student who gain/gains a high score by cheating. Obviously, cheating is wrong although it works. For businessmen, no doubt their responsibility is to increase their profit margin n.利润率[这个地方经典的写法shi :--no doubt one of the most important things is to maximize the profits自己要变通的,只是最基本的描述,]. Yet hiring child labour is illegal, although it might reduce the labor cost and increase the profit. What a pathetic sight to see godly people give up the gold of principle for the glass beads of pragmatism. The serious moral degradation in modern China well demonstrates this point. On the contrary,Idealists would choose to sticke to priciple without a practical consideration. For them, freedom, democracy and justice shoud be worth of pursuing at whatever cost. They never compromise even it is unfeasible. However, a pretty awesome reality requires the art of compromise: striking a balance between what is right and what "works".
Moreover, too much exphasis on practical access will hamper us from seeing the long-term interest and attaining a higher level of success. Immidiate benefits become a measure to evaluate pragmatic behavior. Such shorted-sight behavior forms a barrier of social improvement and advancement. In the economic field, pragmatic businessman brought us the likes of Enron and their ilk, which focused solely on maximizing short-term profits, and fostered a culture of unbridled greed, regardless of the impact on their employees, customers and the public good. By contrast, far-sighted enterprise owners admit that while profitability is a key goal (as with any business), it is not the only goal. They intentionally, and with full awareness, sacrifice a portion of profit margin for big-vision, right-livelihood practices they deem important — such as being ethical, respectful, and offering something positive, unique, and worthwhile to their employees, customers, community or the world.
However, idealistic views cannot come true without taking any pragmatic behavior. Confucius, one of the greatest philosophers and educators in ancient China once said:" Thinking all day without taking any actions end up with nothing." It is well known that idealists have always been guided by ideals, rather than by practical consideration. Therefore, they mistakenly discern the true condition , overstate their ability and neglect the many obstacles on the way to the goal. The only feasible way is to crystallize one's ideals into a practical plan. Step by step, even through the efforts of several generations, the ideals can become reality.
The only way to achieve victory is combine pragmatic behavior and idealistic views. An ideal is like true North on a compass, and it serves a valuable function whether or not true North (the ideal) can be reached. The virtue of Idealists is their continual striving for betterment.Socially speaking, it was always the prophet, the seer, the idealist, who dreamed of a world more to his heart’s desire and who served as the beacon light on the road tp greater achievement. And then the next step is to take a concreate action. Without practical action, success is still like the moon in the water.
In conclusion, pragmatism may be a good copilot, but it is an unsafe and dangerous pilot. The true success requires the cooperation of pragmatism and idealism. Ideal acts as a blueprint; and practical behavior is like builder. Only the two work hand in hand can the skyscraper come into existence.(697words) |
