Personal Statement
“You can make millions of decisions that mean nothing and then one day your order takes out and it changes your life.” That was me, deciding majoring in Chinese Language and Literature.
In 2011, I was accepted by the department of Chinese in Anhui University. Honestly before taking this specialty, my whole life and mind were formless and empty. For me, literature was the lighthouse, which illumined myself and my dream. Well, literature is the literature of human being. We could find ourselves in the literary world and explore others’ inside, amazed by the beauty, ugliness and complexity of humanity. What’s more, to me, Chinese is flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times. Both of the two reasons are why I am determined to dedicate my life to Chinese Literature and Language.
In the past 3 academic years, I have taken nearly 31 professional subjects, and the scores of the 64% are more than 90. All of my teaching practices are A, then I qualifying for Mandarin Class Two advanced certificate.
In the first academic year my GPA is 3.361; second year, 3.838; third year, 4.061, and my whole GPA is 3.728 which is top 5 in our major(42 students totally). I have got the National Encouragement Scholarship and professional bursary, which are awarded for students who have academic excellence and remarkable social and operational capability. Besides, I am the only one who has won two consecutive scholarship in our major.
Considering the professional study and research, I was appealed by the Chinese classical literature and theory of literature especially. Once professor Wu Huimin, our classical literature teacher, talked about the essay of Ming and Qing Dynasties, I was totally attracted by leisure life and aesthetic taste of elegance. I had strong curiosity of exploring both outside and inside world of ancient people. Then I found several relative books and papers to read, such as the essays of Ming and Qing Dynasties. Finally, I decided to choose Zhang Dai’s essays as the main topic of my course thesis, and I exchanged my ideas with professor Wu who advised me to read all of papers about Zhang Dai in last 5 years. In the following month, I read dozens of his essays and biographies with taking lots of notes. In the process, the various conditions of female lives, especially those bottom prostitutes, truly both moved and shocked me. And I also summarized those papers, finding that there were only 2 papers about images of women in Zhang Dai’s essays. However this topic was precisely my interest, and then I spent a few days writing the outline of my thesis which satisfied professor Wu. In the subsequent month, I constantly enriched my article while absorbing professor Wu’s advice and communicating with roommates. After modified for 3 times, the thesis was finally finished. Then I got an A.
Apart from academic study, I also have had various extracurricular activities and been the class secretary for 3 years. Those experiences have broadened my outlook and helped me qualify "Merit Student" and "Excellent Cadres". Cooperating with classmates, I have won "Excellent Class" and "Progressive League" for our class. Only two or three classes could win both of them in our school.
Actually, summer vacation could provide me with chances of having social practice. Last summer, I spent 2 months in our local library volunteering to taking care of children whose parents were busy in work. During getting along with them, I realised the absence of parents in children’s growth might make them independent but also result in being unsociable and sensitive. And this summer, I became the internship in Anhui Daily(Agriculture) for 3 months. I have interviewed various people alone, such as local government workers, grocers and migrant workers. And in coverage of reform of the household registration system, I analyzed the number of questionnaires with my teammates, concluding that education would be the hot topic. Luckily our advice was adopted by the chief editor, and the report mainly finished by me was published as the headline. Besides, I also established deep friendship with other colleagues, and have learnt tons of professional knowledge and skills from them.
In short, I am thirsty to be admitted in your renowned university, where I want to be trained in profound knowledge and modern practices for Chinese language and literature. I wish to perfect myself and make myself into an knowledgeable and sincere inheritor of Chinese culture. My aim is not only to be the “specialist” of my own field, but also to be a “generalist” in social life. Only attending your school can I have chance to achieve my dream, for your spirit, ‘ competent professional, critical thinker and life-long learner ’ , exactly represents what I want to be. So, I would have a greater expectation for creative awareness, practical capacities and scientific approaches from your school(The City University of Hong Kong). Thank your for your time and your kind consideration. |
