57) The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of marketing at Dura-Sock, Inc.
A recent study of our customers suggests that our company is wasting the money it spends on its patented Endure manufacturing process, which ensures that our socks are strong enough to last for two years. We have always advertised our use of the Endure process, but the new study shows that despite our socks' durability, our average customer actually purchases new Dura-Socks every three months. Furthermore, our customers surveyed in our largest market, northeastern United States cities, say that they most value Dura-Socks' stylish appearance and availability in many colors. These findings suggest that we can increase our profits by discontinuing use of the Endure manufacturing process.

    The vice president argues that Dura-Sock can increase its profits by discontinuing use of the patented Endure manufacturing process because recent studies show that drop the process will do the company no harm in sales. Well, in order to assess this argument to see whether or not it is reasonable, additional evidences are needed. Those evidences may strengthen or weaken this argument.

    First of all, I need strong evidences to prove that the survey taken in the company`s largest market can accurately present the whole situation of the country and those who answered do pay little attention to sock`s endurance rather than styles and colors. 那个调查只是在东北部的一商场里进行的,并不一定具有代表性,不能说明全国市场的消费者也是如此想的;而且,那调查的样本有多大,可能很小,因而没有说服力;同时,哪些表态的消费者,其那么说是基于袜子的质量已经很好很耐用的前提,其也是很在乎质量的,这是首要因素,款式及颜色才是次要因素。

    The second evidences needed are that those customer who regularly purchase new Dura-Socks do have little consideration to socks` durability. 也许,是因为看到了广告,才决定买D的袜子的,尽管其更换的比较快,未必等到袜子破了才买新的,但其爱穿新的同时也是非常讲究用的产品的质量的。

    Third, I need evidence to prove that the recent study, which show that the customers suggests that the company is wasting money on Endure manufacturing process, is taken in scientific way and those answered customers tell what they really think. 可能,采访的人比较小采访的对象也比较单一不具代表性,因而没有说服力;同时,可能回答的人也比较少,而且,回答的人也没有说出真实的想法,可能忽悠了采访者。

Her argument seems solid and convincing at first glance, yet readers still need to examine the related hypotheses and judge the validation of her assertion.

中间第一段
ts (pt1): To begin with, the author postulates that the consumers will throw away their old socks when purchasing the new ones.

汗 原题作者从来没说过消费者会扔掉旧袜子  这里应该说 it is implicitly assumed that ...


如果真如作者所想的那样,消费者每过三个月就买一双新袜子扔一双旧袜子,那么用特殊工艺生产能穿两年而不坏的袜子的确是浪费钱的。不过消费者可能只是买了新袜子,而将旧袜子收起来以后再穿,那么每双袜子的累积使用时间可能达两年,那么Dura-Socks的工艺就不浪费了。

将旧袜子收起来以后再穿 这种可能性感觉不是很靠谱

中间第二段
ts (pt2): Moreover, the writer assumes that the responses from the purchasers in northeastern cities can represent those from the users in other parts of United States . 要是真如作者所想,那么的确该公司最大市场的情况就是其整个市场情况的缩影,从那里采集的证据就能使Dura-Socks放弃原工艺。可是有可能这个最大市场的情况与其它美国市场大不一样,那么这里的消费者的回答就不能决定该公司的生产了。

ts (pt3): The last assumption is that the consumers who emphasize the fashionable styles and colorful appearance of Dura-Sock’s products do not care about their durability at all.  作者将“最看重”时髦的造型和众多的颜色等同于“不在乎”耐用性,如果真是如此那么Dura-Socks就的确不必采用加强工艺了。可是倘若正是其产品的耐用性足够强,以至于消费者充分相信其质量,因而不大强调耐用性了,换言之,消费者看重Dura-Socks袜子外表的基础是它们的质量太好,那么作者的结论就不成立了。因为一旦停止使用加强工艺,该公司的产品穿不了多久便破了,消费者的注意力也许就被拉回袜子的质量上了。他们认为这个品牌的袜子质量不如从前,也许就不买了,有损该公司盈利。

这道题最终的结论是不用专利后会提高利润 一方面不用交专利费肯定可以降低成本 但是 利润能否提升还取决于 销售额会否减少 因此需要讨论不用这个技术后 会否影响消费者的信心以致影响销售 这一点应该贯穿全文  目前你的讨论中似乎没有提到这一点 因此假设是否成立对结论是否成立的影响没有讨论到
