34) The vice president of human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation to the company's president.
In an effort to improve our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits.
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

assumptions about wasting time
- some leisure time spent online may boost productivity - not a waste of time
- when being monitored, employees may waste time offline

assumptions about better work ethic
- punishing the behaviour may not improve the work ethic but lead to low morale
- work all the time and no play are really good work ethic (maybe too stressful; no room for creativity; no flirting)

assumptions about profit improvement
- the monitoring system could be expensive (to install and maintain)
- employees may leave the company (cost for HR)
- legal risk (employees may sue the company for violating privacy)

1.In this recommendation the VP firstly assumes that employees of CI are of low productivity because personal entertainments on their PS have distracted them from work.
- working environmental is out of amenity
- too heavy workload
- lack of necessarily skills required by employee’s position

2.Action of implementing monitoring function will prevent wasting time and increasing productivity
- may arise unhappiness
- employee may take more time on finding a software to get rid of monitoring
- this implement cause the computers running relatively slow, reduce the productivity
- employee may use other services to dandy the day

3. implement by force will improve overall profits
- unfriendly policy lead a lost of talented employees
- implement is of great cost
- this policy might be faced with ethical charge,  cost the company a lot to hire a lawyer to solve the issue


最后一段跟Simon老师一致,前两个不太一样。
讨论之后Simon的理由是题目中提到“prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits.”不妨直接借用题目的famework来构建。

Electronic monitoring is recommended by the vice president to prevent employees from wasting time, foster a better work ethic and improve the productivity. However, in the argument, the key impediment to higher profits is assumed to be the low productivity and time wasting. Besides, it is assumed that electrical monitoring is effective to prevent employees from spending working hours on unrelated activities. These assumptions play key roles in the logical chain and should be further validated to strengthen the argument.

Firstly, the low productivity is assumed to be the root cause of low profits. Actually, there are many other factors which may have great impact on the profits made by the company. The economy may be too weak to provide enough opportunities for the company to make profits. The design of the product or the service provided by the company may be obsolete and can't meet the requirement of target customers.
第一,低下的生产效率被当作是利润较低的根本原因。但i其实有很多其他原因会影响公司的利润。例如市场疲软导致公司没有足够的机会,或是产品及服务的设计过时,无法满足客户的需求。也可能是成本提升侵蚀了公司的利润。

Besides, the waste of time is assumed to be blamed for the low productivity, while efficient decision making and execution process are also important to productivity.
生产效率的低下被归罪于员工浪费了工作的时间,但有效率的决策和执行流程也非常重要。例如决策层在进行产品的定位和设计的时候朝令夕改会导致员工无所适从,而工作流程的冗余繁杂也会导致生产效率不高。另外制造过程中的自动化程度也大大影响到生产效率的高低。

Assuming the electrical monitoring is effective to prevent time wasting and foster a better working environment, the vice president strongly recommended to adopt this method. Neverthless, punishing guys who are identified by the software may give too much pressure on employees and further make the working environment depressing.
副总裁认为电子监控会有效减少浪费时间的行为,并且培养更良好的工作环境,因此强烈推荐这样的方法。但是惩罚被监控的员工会导致员工压力倍增,让工作环境变得很压抑。从这个意义山来说,适当的疏导更有助于工作效率的提升。
