here's the math:
for a duke student under 40% tw (a top one) and taking 2 courses in the fourth semester (which appears to me to be the norm):
2-year tuition=23795*3*60%+16590*20%=46,149 USD=30,403 GBP (note he has a 80% tw for the fourth semester, which is also the norm)

1-year ra/ta income=8000 USE=5268 GBP. Let's assume that's all one can earn for the 2 year program.

30,403-5,268=25,135 GBP, which is only a little more  than LSE's one-year tuition of 24,500. Note that zero tw and zero ra/ta income is the norm at LSE.

If we take living cost into account, living in Durham is way cheaper than in London.

I kind of prefer Durham over London. Maybe I'm weird or ignorant, but I guess preference is highly personal and should only be taken into account with special caution.

The trickiness in this LSE/DUKE financial comparison lies in the value of LSE's second year. Maybe one can make quite a fortune out of it, maybe not. I'm not so sure about it.

其实我一直在黑伦敦......如果没必要的话真的别把家里钱砸在伦敦这城市上 ;) 不知道你们去过伦敦没有，我觉得除了个别老建筑、名胜、大型公园外有看头外（游人吵杂），伦敦真的不怎么适合人居住。

需要散散心都得走几公里路或者坐地铁才能到一个大一点环境好一点的公园。即使住到离市中心近的地方，若是想便宜一点，那些区也都很shabby了。另外就是除非你去waitrose或者whole foods之类的hippie超市购物，其他超市诸如sainsbury的食品质量真的很低（牛肉猪肉都也是灌水的），不如记忆中德州的好，更没法和瑞士瑞典德国这些国家比（这些国家的牛肉猪肉都不灌水）。

相反，楼主其他选择的城市，花更少的钱换更好的生活质量，无非就是少那么些昂贵高档的商店或者餐厅或者消费街，穷留学生反正也没钱去消费，想去名校的更不会把时间金钱浪费在那些上面。我没去过剑桥，但是去过牛津。在牛津吃一顿Sunday roast的价格也是比我在伦敦去过的便宜，还更好吃（这两家店都分别是牛津、伦敦某区受欢迎的店）。氛围的话也是牛津更适合读书。假设剑桥和牛津类似，我觉得肯定会比在伦敦住得好。

首先这个版是寄托经济，楼主也报的是经济ad,如果你在举例说的是别的专业，我实在不知道你来寄托经济版发帖有什么意义？去自己了解的专业发帖去。

ok,如果不是Econ的话，那就更是问题了，每个专业都有自己的强项，你去哈佛读个无奖教育学(no offense)，就能比BU ECON MA在申请时占优势？

“当年，我怕在北大读本科考不上北大研究生，所以高中报大学的时候，我最终直接放弃北大录取而选择了中央财经大学。” 如果你有这样在北大怕吊车尾，怕考不上北大研究生的心态，那么我也只能说四年不论在哪个大学读下来，也不能改变最初你对自己不自信，这也恰好证明了: you don't deserve a place at PKU。

从理论的角度，这样评论各个项目真的没什么意思。给我的感觉似乎是你已经拿着哈佛录取指点江山了，那倒是先把哈佛无奖硕士的录取拿出来给我这种小弱瞻仰一下，可好？

最后想说, 你说的道理是对的, 可能在二流大学stand out top 1比在一流大学survive更能申请到很好的phd项目，但是记得之前版上不知哪位gt版友说过“就是一般大学Top 1当多了才不知道自己几斤几两。” 一流大学能够给你提供的视野、竞争、networking等等是无可替代的。而如果你在进入一个项目之前就抱着“我知道我肯定不能在这种一流大学stand out”的想法，我只能说那些一流大学白瞎了发给你这种unqualified的并且深信自己将会一直unqualifed for top u的人录取了。

LSE的话，假如是EME，那是可以dominate Cambridge，但是ECON的话，我觉得难说，个人觉得不如Cambridge
Duke的话，他应该也不分中国人和外国人吧，他是瑞士人，特别关注中国人干啥。只是说针对TOP10的ECON项目而言，他觉得Duke不那么好
这三个项目我也都拿到了，第一步排除的就是LSE的ECON，然后在Duke和Cam之间选择
