The following appeared in the summary of a study on headaches suffered by the residents of Mentia.        

Salicylates are members of the same chemical family as aspirin, a medicine used to treat headaches. Although many foods are naturally rich in salicylates, for the past several decades, food-processing companies have also been adding salicylates to foods as preservatives. This rise in the commercial use of salicylates has been found to correlate with a steady decline in the average number of headaches reported by participants in our twenty-year study. Recently, food-processing companies have found that salicylates can also be used as flavor additives for foods. With this new use for salicylates, we can expect a continued steady decline in the number of headaches suffered by the average citizen of Mentia.

In this argument, in order to decline the number of headaches suffered by the average citizen, the author thinks that the addition of salicylates, the average number of headaches reported by participants in the twenty-year study has declined. However, to evaluate the author’s assertion, several questions need to be answered.

Another important issue to look into is the time the study conducted. According to the argument, the author has carried out the experiment for twenty years. Yet it is entirely possible that, despite during twenty-year period, the average number of headache cases reported declined, the salicylates indeed assuage headache problems, it does not necessarily mean that headache will not reappear after the observation. If those who take salicylates are more likely to get salicylates years later (in this case, twenty years later), salicylates is not actually good medicine to cure headache in the long run.

As far as using salicylates as flavor additives for food is concerned, even if salicylates have no side effects and the participants are free from headache after the research, the headaches suffered number may not decrease as the author claims. If the people there find the new flavor disgusting, they are not likely to buy food with salicylates, the without eating salicylates, salicylates will not treat people’s headaches.
