作文题:TPO 32
综合写作
The reading passage raised three explanations for the strange sounds.
First, these strange noises may be the calls of males and female Ocra whales during a courtship ritual. Second, the sounds may be caused by giant squid, which live deep in the ocean and are difficult to detect by sonar. Third, the Russian submarines were picking up stray sounds from some military technology, which was specifically designed to make them undetectable by sonar.

In the lecture, the professor pointed out that none of these three reasons could hold water.

For the first explanation, the professor said that although it seemed plausible, it was ultimately highly unlikely. Because there were Ocra populations in the general areas that in Russian submarines were patrolling. The Ocra Whale usually live in near the surface of the water. The submarines typically remained deep in the oceans and should not be able to hear the whale sound from near the surface. And also the whales could be detected if they were nearby.

For the second reason, the professor opposed to it by the facts that the sounds of giant squid couldn't have appeared suddenly in a decade and disappeared in two decades. According to the professor, Russian submarines first detected the quacker in 1960 and the sound continued for about 20 years and disappeared. If it was the giant squid that caused the sounds, there would not be valid reasons for the sudden appearance and disappearance of them.

As to the last explanation, the professor pointed out that the sources of the sound changed directions very quickly. But no submarines could move or change their directions at that speed. Besides, all submarines made some engine noises, but no such noise was found with the quacker. Even today, we still don't have the technology to build submarines which are so fast and so silent.

独立写作:
Nowadays, our world keeps changing at an unprecedented speed. Under this circumstance, some people argue that people in this fast-changing society may be less happy or satisfied with their lives than people were in the past. From my perspective, this statement cannot hold water.

To begin with, just think of the reason that the world are changing. It is the development of science and technology that makes our life and our world moving faster and changing more quickly. The initial goal for developing science and technology is to make human's life better. Looking back into the history, since the industry revolution, many epoch-making innovations have made people's life happier and more convenient, of course, making the world change faster too. No one can deny that people now are enjoying a better life than people were before the Industry Revolution.

Second, whether people nowadays are less happy or less satisfied with their lives than people were in the past is difficult to measure. As we don't have a standard ruler to measure the degree of everyone's happiness, it is unreasonable to make the claim that people nowadays are less happy. Different people have different feelings and definitions of happiness and satisfaction, and people's attitudes toward happiness may change with time changing. So we shouldn't simply judge whether people today are less happy than the past.

Besides, could people's emotional changes be explained by the quick changes of the world? I doubt it. Just think of the last time when you got really upset, was it because of the quick changes of the world? I suppose most people's answers will be no. Admittedly, people nowadays often feel upset about their lives, but we cannot make a conclusion that it is the quick-changing world make them unhappy. The factors may be diverse, environmental pollutions, work pressure, disease, troubles in the marriage, or even because one feels his life is changeless.

In brief, I admit that under some circumstances, quick changes of the world may upset some people, but we cannot make the conclusion that people today are not as happy as people were in the past, or simply attribute people's unhappiness to the changing world.
