Argument76: 433 words
The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.
'A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin.'

The argument concludes that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin. To substantiate this conclusion, the arguer cites a study of consumer responses participated by a group of volunteers most of whom reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. This argument is problematic in several critical respects.

First of all, the reliability of the study is open to question. The arguer fails to provide any evidence to describe how the study was conducted and whether this group of volunteeres is representative of all people. It is possible that the number of volunteers are too small to be statistical significant and therefore the result of the study would be weakened. Or perhaps these volunteers are chosen by the corporate that produces Luxess, and they might get some benefits from advertising for this corporate. If this is the case, the credibility of this argument will be seriously undermined.

Even if we accept the credibility of the study, this argument will also be weakened if we take into account the potential function of mild soap which might contribute to the improvement of the skins of those volunteers. As is presented, those volunteers washed their faces with mild soap and Luxess together. It is entirely possible that some chemical components in the mild soap rather than Luxess help the volunteers' skins to look better, or it is equally possible that the mixture of both components in the soap and Luxess works for the skin. Without ruling out these possibilities, the conclusion of the argument is untenable.

Finally, the arguer fails to provide any objective criterion to measure the effectiveness of Luxess. It is only reported by the volunteers about how their skins look and felt. Although I do not deny that their voices might be an important factor in deciding the effectiveness of the study, however, this feeling of improvement could also be attributed to psychological feeling rather than an indeed improvement of the skin. After all, people always tend to feel better after attending such kind of studies. Without giving an objective standard in measuring the improvement, people are unlikely to truly believe the effectiveness of Luxess.

In conclusion, this argument, while seems to be sound at first glance, suffers several flaws as demonstrated. To strengthen it, the arguer needs to provide more evidence to convince us the reliability of the study. Also, the arguer should find a way to rule out the possibility that the mild soap might works for skin improvement. Furthermore, an objective criterion should be used in measuring the effectiveness of Luxess.

Even if we accept the credibility of the study, this argument will also be weakened if we take into account the——你有没有感觉 Even if we accept the credibility of the study 改为“Even if the group of the volunteers accurately represent all people"之类的比较好一些吧。

不过,这么一来,如果再回头看“Even if we accept the credibility of the study”那段,就发现其实这篇阿狗全部都要谈the credibility of the study,说even if accept the  credibility of the study似乎作者不再谈论study了。

It is possible that the number of volunteers are 。。。这里的are 是is 吧。
