McGill has far more prestige in most of the world including the the North East US.

Firstly, the only way to "rank" a school would be to look at each program specifically.
But if you insist on talking about which school is considered the best overall then just to set the record straight –McGill is heralded internationally as Canada’s best university – and within North America it’s referred to as the “Harvard of the North”.

McGill has produced some of the world’s greatest minds and most innovative research, much has of which has been in Medicine.

Historically McGill at one time was known as the best Medical School in North America – being matched only by Harvard.

Fun McGill facts:

-Most Nobel Laureates on faculty in all Canada
-Produced more Nobel Laureates then any other university in Canada
-Produced more Rhodes Scholars (123 Rhodes Scholars) then any other university in Canada
-First choice for Ivy League accepted American students
-Highest overall selectivity rate

Neither Harvard nor Princeton have the best business schools, law schools or medical schools in the US; those honors would go to the likes of Stanford, PENN & Yale. Princeton lacks many of those grad schools and faired quite badly on US News & World Report rankings. But! Harvard & Princeton are is still considered the most prestigious universities in the United States, quite possibly the world.

Generally speaking McGill University internationally is heralded as being the most prestigious University in Canada. That is simply a FACT. Please don’t regurgitate McLean’s magazine - it shows lack of knowledge and resources.

Also, McGill Medical School is widely considered the finest medical school in Canada, & one of the finest in the world – despite McLean’s “Magazine”, which most academics take with a grain of salt and most normal people around the world have never even heard of. The fact that McLean’s clumps together Medical/Doctoral studies as one category shows its utter absurdity.

While I’m quite sure some schools are better then McGill in certain areas – it’s expected… - that doesn’t take away from McGill’s reputation as being the best overall university in Canada.

Let me give you an example that might help some of you to understand my point.

US Top “Ranked” Grad Schools:

Stanford University - #1 Ranked Medical School
Wharton – University of Pennsylvania #1 Ranked Business School
Yale - #1 Ranked Law School

Harvard didn’t make the top ranking in any of the big 3 – BUT! , it’s consistently ranked the best overall because of it’s strengths in most areas - from the fine arts to the sciences.

McGill is the same – it’s considered Canada’s best – the Harvard of the North”. It attracts the best international student pool in Canada – and it’s first choice to the best American applicants, many of whom have never heard of U o T and who choose McGill over Ivy league counter parts due to the great price tag, international reputation and dynasty of world class faculty and Nobel Laureates.

In the London Sunday Times, far more respected internationally then McLean’s, the Master of Pembroke College, University of Cambridge in the UK ranked McGill #10 in the world after the likes of Harvard, Yale, Princeton La Sorbonne, Oxford, Cambridge, Heidelberg, etc. – McGill was the only Canadian university to even make the International top 10 list for international prestige.

FYI: At over 60 thousand students (Canada’s largest university, U of “accept everyone” Toronto's Medical School doesn’t even require the MCAT. As an overall university U of T has a reputation for housing a large proportion of unhappy students, in large part because of its size.

Don’t get me wrong – it’s a great research institution, and not a bad school – but it’s no McGill.

McGill is Canada’s most prestigious university – U of T, Queens, UBC, Dalhousie are all just runners up by an international perspective.
