Hi Anne, thank you for your time to be here. Could you please tell me something about the situation  ...

Hi and thanks for your question. We have an extensive Career Development program. We have a specialized LLM career advisor who works in our office and her job is dedicated 100% to LLM career support. I think you will find that is unheard of in most U.S. law schools. As part of our program, we put on career workshops (how to write a resume, how to interview, etc.), we are part of two nationwide LLM job fairs (in NYC and in LA), we put on networking events, and provide lots of individual counseling. The long-term job prospects for LLM students in the U.S. is very tough, but for the short-term OPT period, there are plenty of opportunities so long as you work hard to find them and you are open to unpaid and part-time work. I hope that helps!

Hi and thanks for your question. We consider all aspects of the application. We consider our admission process "holistic" in nature. So honestly, all parts of your application are equally as important. Of course, English skills are important to help you succeed in law school classes, but all other parts of your application are important too. We do not offer English conditional admission. The only conditional admission we offer is for students who have not yet earned their LLB degrees but will soon - we admit them "conditionally" until they complete the LLB degree and submit those final transcripts to the university.

Hi and thanks for your question. While work experience is not required, it can definitely support your application, especially if other areas are not as strong, such as your GPA. There is no guarantee that it will be enough to outweigh your GPA, but it will definitely help. I would encourage you to bring this up in your personal statement - mention how you acknowledge your lower GPA but that you have all this great work experience that you feel is really strong for your application.

Hi and thanks for your question. Our general university has the 2nd highest number of international students in the country. Because of this, we fortunately have lots and lots of support for international students. We have central university services, such as a great Office of International Services, as well as more specific services such as our Graduate & International Programs office. Our "G&IP" office within the law school, where I work, has 10 full-time staff members - all of those people are 100% dedicated to our LLM students. If you ask other U.S. law schools, you will find that this is incredibly high, almost unheard of! This means that our level of support services is extremely high. We provide a lot of individual support as well as a lot of group programming. As you can tell, I am very proud of our staff and the support we provide to our LLM students!

Hi and thanks for your question. We do indeed have a LLM-JD transfer program! Each year, about 12-15 USC LLM students apply to transfer to our USC JD program. Of those, usually 1-4 are admitted. Those who are admitted have strong backgrounds, and very, very strong LLM grades. The LLM coursework and performance is definitely the most important part of the application, so people considering the LLM-JD transfer program should be prepared to study very hard during the LLM program! Of the students we have admitted over the years, many of them have been Chinese. Please feel free to email us (gipadmissions@law.usc.edu) if you'd like to be connected to any of them. This coming year, we are also opening our LLM-JD transfer program up to LLM graduates from other U.S. law schools - those applicants will need to have also done really well in their respective LLM programs.

Hi and thanks for your question. We do offer scholarships, although you are right that it is a competitive process. I wish we had more budget for scholarships, and hopefully some day we will. In the meantime, we are able to offer scholarships on a merit basis, so to those applicants who have strong records - including GPA, TOEFL, work experience, letters of recommendation, etc. This year, we are introducing a brand-new scholarship that is unique for Chinese applicants only! You will be automatically considered for this special Global Award when you apply to our program. You can find more information at: http://gould.usc.edu/how/gip/llm/fees.cfm

There are many law schools with great curriculum in various areas, but if you are interested in entertainment law, Los Angeles is definitely where you need to be. USC is consistently ranked as the #1 entertainment law program in the country, and we are geographically just a few minutes from Hollywood and all the major movie studios. Most of our entertainment law courses are taught by full-time entertainment professionals who teach part-time. They are major movie studio executives, vice presidents of legal affairs for big entertainment corporations, agents, and more.

If you enroll in any of our certificates, you can easily also complete the bar exam requirements. We have a "track" registration system where we provide very easy information about all the classes you need to take to complete your track. You can do a certificate track, a bar track, or both at the same time.

Today, a gun battle broke out in California. Does University of Southern California have enough secu ...

Hi and thanks for your question. We are all very sad, of course, to hear about the attack that took place in San Bernardino today. While I personally feel very safe coming to campus today (and every day for the last 10 years I've worked at USC), we do live in a large city and we always tell our students that they need to take safety precautions you would in any large city. We never advise that students walk off-campus alone at night. But otherwise, I think most students find that they feel pretty safe near campus. USC has its own Department of Public Safety - which is a USC-exclusive, armed police force that patrols the campus as well as the surrounding area where students live. DPS can arrive within a few short minutes to any scene, and they do a great deal to keep us safe. Our campus itself is locked from 9pm to 7am every day and only students with ID cards can get in. Most of our parking structures and all housing complexes are gated and ID cards are necessary for entrance. The university offers free transportation home for students at night, from anywhere (for example, the library) to anywhere (for example, home). There is lots we do to protect our students. Of course, terrible things happen all over the world every day. But I really, truly hope that we can keep our students as safe as possible.

Most of our classes are integrated between LLM and JD students. We do have some (maybe 10 or so) classes that are only for LLM students, but they are optional - for the students who feel more comfortable being with only LLM students. But most LLM students take most of their classes with JD students.

We don't have a minimum IELTS score, but since yours is slightly below our average, I would strongly recommend that you attend our Summer Law & English program prior to the LLM program, should you be admitted. It will be a great way for you to brush up on your English.

Hi and thanks for your question. Honestly, all aspects of your application are equally important. I know that's never the answer prospective students want to hear, but it's true! We really value your GPA, TOEFL, personal statement, resume, and letters of recommendation as a whole.

Hi Annie,

Thank you for your detailed introduction.

From the past statistics, how many LLM graduates joined law firms to work as Attorney immediately after completion of USC LLM program and passing of Bar Exam each year?

hi anne,What's the advantage of USC's LLM comparing with other  school's? And I would like to know U ...

Hi and thanks for your question. What a big question! I have to say, I am very proud of our LLM program. I have worked here for nearly 10 years for a reason - I love it here! The things that I think distinguish our LLM program against other programs in the U.S. are as follows.

We have a 10-member LLM staff. This is much larger than normal, and almost unheard of in LLM programs. All our staff are 100% dedicated to LLM students. We do a great deal of individual counseling as well as group programs. We get to know all of our students and really treat you like family - what we call our Trojan Family!

As part of that service, our LLM students are normally able to register in the majority of the classes they want. Registration can be difficult at a lot of law schools. Because the American Bar Association requires that LLM students register after JD students, classes often fill up and there is no room for LLM students in popular classes. At USC, we do an extensive amount of work to make sure students get the classes they want. Of course, there are always classes that fill - but the majority of LLM students get into the majority of classes they want at USC. I think that's unique among law schools.

We provide a great deal of advising too. We have a "track" system for our registration. That means if you choose a certificate and/or bar courses, we guarantee we can get you to your goals. For example, if your goal is to complete the business certificate and take the NY Bar after graduation, we guarantee we will enroll you in the classes necessary for those goals. Along with goals, we have a 100% dedicated LLM career advisor to help with thinking about life after the LLM program - OPT internships, long-term work, networking, improving English, etc.

We have scholarships available to LLM students, but they are only for tuition purposes. You can find more information at: http://gould.usc.edu/how/gip/llm/fees.cfm. If you are interested in conferences though, the law school offers fantastic Continuing Legal Education conferences - which are great opportunities for students to network with legal professionals. Our office pays for the conference fees for LLM students to attend these conferences if they wish. You can find more information about CLE at: http://gould.usc.edu/why/academics/cle/

Hi Anne, thank you for your time to communicate with us. I am applying for Electrical Engineering Department in Veiterbi School of Engineering.

I have a question about application details, I am going to send my transcript to USC admission office, and I do not know where to get my bar code as required on the transcript cover page. I was wondering if it is not necessary for international students.

By the way, if I apply both phd program and MS program using one part of application fee, will the admission decision be affected due to multiple programs applied? Besides, if I apply for international scholarship, will my admission decision be affected?

The last question I would like to ask is that if I apply phd program, or master program choosing preferred faculty, and the professor do not decide to enroll new students, will my application be rejected or adjusted into a no thesis master program? If I was turned to a master applicant from a phd applicatn, does that mean my admission must be put behind those who applying for a master degree? If I have the opportunity to apply for a master based on research, must I stress it in my Statement of Purpose?
