Hi and thanks for your question. Our university is very decentralized, and since I work in the law school, I really only know about our law programs. I'm sorry that I can't be more helpful. I hear the Price school is very excellent though! I would recommend contacting them for specific information. Please see their website at: http://priceschool.usc.edu/programs/masters/mpl/

Hi Annie,

Thank you for your detailed introduction.

Hi and thanks for your question. LLM statistics are extremely difficult for schools to track because graduates go all over the world. Job placement stats are also not super helpful for students because there is such a wide variety of graduates - some already have jobs they return to (their work has sponsored their studies), some seek additional education after the LLM, many stay in the U.S. for the one-year Optional Practical Training visa extension in which case they are doing internships as opposed to full-time positions. I'm sorry that we simply cannot track these stats, but I can assure you that most LLM students do very well and tell us that they use their LLM degree to leverage their careers.

Our bar pass rates are slightly higher than the national averages. About 15% of international applicants pass the CA Bar and about 40% of international applicants pass the NY Bar. USC students pass at a slightly higher rate. They are still very difficult exams though!

Hello,I aready got a LLM degree. And if I want to get a JD degree in USC, how to apply? As an appli ...

Hi and thanks for your question. You could apply in one of two ways to our JD program. First, you could apply as an LLM-JD transfer applicant. You would transfer your LLM credits to USC and complete the JD in 2 years. In this way, your whole applicant will be important but your LLM grades will be extremely important - by far the most important factor. You can find more information about this program at: http://gould.usc.edu/how/gip/transfer/

Alternatively, you could apply as a regular JD applicant and complete the program in 3 years. In this way, your entire application will still be important but the LSAT will be required (where it is not required for the LLM-JD transfer) so the LSAT score will be strongly considered.

Both programs are very competitive, but great options!

Hi and thanks for your question. Our university is very decentralized, and since I work in the law school, I unfortunately do not have information about other USC schools or programs. I would recommend reaching out to the Viterbi School of Engineering with your questions. Please see their website at: https://gapp.usc.edu. Good luck!

We don't interview all candidates, but if we do invite you for an interview, we will be asking questions about why you want to pursue an LLM degree, why you want to attend USC, what your goals are for the program (for example, what classes you want to take) as well as what your goals are for after the program.

Hi Anne, there is a GTER user who has just been using the wechat to let me talk about his problem:
'I am a sophomore, my major is Business English and that's the matter - I like law rather than Business. I want to apply a LLM or JD degree in US, to continue my study. So could you please give me some suggestions to make up my lack of professional background,so that I have some advantage when competing with other candidates? Many  thanks!'

Hi and thanks for the question via Wechat. We normally require substantial (at least 3-5 full-time years) of legal work experience for students who do not have bachelor of laws (or equivalent) degrees. Unfortunately, we find that without any legal background students will really suffer in the LLM program because they enter straight into "upper-division" (advanced) law classes.

Alternatively, students without bachelors degrees in law can consider pursuing the JD program. In the JD program, students study for 3 years (whereas the LLM is 1 year), so they are introduced to all the basic law concepts in the first year before entering the upper-division courses. For more information on the JD program, please visit: http://gould.usc.edu/how/jd/

Hi Anne thanks again for your reply. There is another question i'd like to ask, which is whether i need to choose the concentration during the application. Can i choose the concentration after the enrollment or registration in your school.

Hi, Ann.

In your answer, you mentioned about the Summer Law & English program. Could you talk about a little more about it?
After finishing this program, besides the improvement of language, what else the student can get? Could the requirement of entrance be lower?
What is the requirement for starting this program?

Thanks a lot~

No need to choose a concentration now. We realize that students change their minds, so you should take your time to decide what your focus is (or if you want a general non-focus focus). We will greatly assist you in choosing courses anyway. If you have any interests now, it's great to mention them in your personal statement - it adds personality to your essay. But it's not necessary to sign up for any "track" at this point.

Hi, Ann.

In your answer, you mentioned about the Summer Law & English program. Could you talk  ...

I'd be happy to talk more about our Summer Law & English program. It's a great program which is really fun for us to put on! The SLE program runs for four weeks every summer, immediately before the LLM program. About 75% of our SLE students are our LLM students - so they start with SLE and then continue onto the LLM. The remaining 25% are LLM students going to other U.S. law schools, or law students or attorneys coming to the U.S. just for the 4 weeks and then returning home.

If you are admitted to the LLM program, you receive automatic admission to the SLE program. If you don't apply for our LLM program and only apply for our SLE program, the admissions standards are different than for the LLM. Because SLE is a non-degree program, the criteria is much less strict. The vast majority of students who fit the eligibility requirements are admitted to SLE, whereas that is definitely not the case for the LLM program.

In addition to improving English, we provide basic overview law instruction in a variety of subjects including criminal law, business law, entertainment law, and more. You have the opportunity to interact with many different professors who have impressive backgrounds. Of the 18 law classes you take over 4 weeks, they are taught by usually 14 or 15 different instructors who are experts in those particular subject areas.

We also provide a lot of LLM preparation. We provide weekly LLM-prep workshops so you can begin to learn how to read cases, take notes, brief cases, etc. If you are continuing to our LLM at USC, there is additional advising for fall registration. Non-SLE students will find the advising information online, but if you are in the SLE program, you'll have in-person assistance to choose your fall courses for the LLM program.

More information on SLE can be found at: http://gould.usc.edu/how/gip/sle/
