Much appreciated! It just seems odd to me what a clerk will do if the clerk does not have a licens ...
A clerk cannot give legal opinions. But he can do research, draft an opinion which may form the basis for a licensed attorney's legal work sending to a client. His role is similar to that of a law student who works as an intern in a law firm setting. But the clerk gets paid and works full time.
Green card is a good insurance policy for an LLM's legal career: you do not worry if you have to leave the firm on two weeks notice. Working in a law firm is stressful enough. Worrying about your visa status would have added more stress on your shoulder.
One more wrinkle about the "law clerk" status: you have to CC an attorney licensed to practice in the same office whenever you communicate with a client regarding the client's legal right . . . Otherwise you might be accused of unauthorized practice of law in certain jurisdictions.
