College of Engineering
PhD positions Available in Medical Robotics
Description: We are seeking exceptional, self-motivated individuals to construct and test a novel minimally-invasive device to reach far inside the human body. Research will include: mechanical and electronic circuit designs, prototyping, and pre-clinical testing of diagnostic and therapeutic devices to address clinical problems. A thorough understanding of and hands-on experience with user-centric designs, electronic circuitry, programming, and systems control in medical applications are highly appreciated. Publication of results is also an integral part of the positions.
Graduate research assistantships are available and include monthly stipends and full tuition waivers.
Key areas of research are listed below:
* Design, development, and experimental validation of mechanical and electronic systems for image-guided therapy
* Integration of novel and established tools for controlling and validating accurate placement of interventional devices
* Investigation of clinical workflows and validation of developed systems in collaboration with clinical partners
Applicants should have a degree in mechanical, electrical, or biomedical engineering, or in a related field, and also have hands-on experience with engineering designs, circuitry, system control and integration, particularly in mechatronic systems or medical device R&D. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated capability in the designing, fabricating, and testing of novel devices, and strong expertise in LabView, Matlab and Solid Works or Pro/Engineer. Candidates will conduct research in the area of minimally invasive interventions in close collaboration with clinical partners.
International PhD Applicants must meet the language requirement for admission of the University of Georgia (http://www.engineering.uga.edu/u ... ndbook-rev-2012.pdf), i.e. score of Internet based-TOEFL test minimum 80; Speaking>20, Writing>20 and Speaking >19.
Qualification requirements for Ph.D. Applicants to be considered:
1. Degree requirement: BEng, (and M.S. degree preferred) in Mechanical/Electrical, Biomedical Engineering or similar backgrounds
2. GRE score: Verbal > 150 (450 on the old scale); Quantitative > 151 (650 on the old scale); Analytical > 3.5
3. GPA: Graduate > 3.5/4.0; Undergraduate > 3.0/4.0
The positions will be based at the Medical Robotics Lab directed by Dr. Zion Tse at UGA. Applications should include your Curriculum Vitae with a full publication list, up-to-three published papers or manuscripts in preparation, and a list of reference contacts (email, telephone and current affiliation) in a single PDF file. Selection and interview process starts now. Please send all inquiries and application materials to Dr. Tse (ziontse@uga.edu).
