Reading original English books is one of the best ways in English study. If you have a reading habit you can benefit a great deal from it. However, if you are thinking of reading as a mean of learning the language you need to read books or articles which is on your own level; otherwise, reading can be frustrating and tedious.

During my American high school visit back in 1999, when the assistant professor showed me around in the school library, I was told that in American schools reciprocal teaching and guided reading programs are the most commonly used methods in reading. Children are tested at the beginning of the school year of their reading level and then they are advised on what kind of books they should read.

Reciprocal teaching and guided reading are a little similar to the intensive reading course in Chinese school, though they emphasize more on the understanding of the content through listening and speaking interaction between teachers and students. In this way reading can be used to encourage students’ independent thinking. There are a lot of techniques involved in it, such as summarizing, problem and solution, retelling, etc.

For our Chinese students who have no chance to get professional guidance they need to start from easier books, so that they can build up their confidence through reading. “Intensive” reading is a better way to learn the language. “Extensive” reading can help you build up you vocabulary, and it fits more to the advanced learners.

The thing is, to form a reading habit rather than simply to read for solely reading's sake benifits the reader not only the use of English but also the sense of reading, which I think contributes to one's study at all account.

Save your time from PC games or those time-consuming but meaningless jobs, provide yourself with a free space to read whatever you like, sooner or later you are going to find yourself indulging in the saga of world.

As Fran indicated above, selective reading is also of great importance, especially for those who are limited with time. But here, what I want to suggest is to start your reading today, no matter how difficult and uncomfortable it is, considering the normal obstacles in reading foreign materials, just start to form a reading habit, and you will soon hurdle those tough things appear at an early stage.
