49 Imaginative works such as novels, plays, films, fairy tales, and legends present a more accurate and meaningful picture of human experience than do factual accounts. Because the creators of fiction shape and focus reality rather than report on it literally, their creations have a more lasting significance.

Coincident with the constant development of modern technology, human's emotional needs are rising paralleling at an alarming speed. In order to cater the increasing demands of people's psychological world, more and more writers devote themselves into imaginative works which thrive under a circumstance calling for some ingredients to compensate the dull life. Often, imaginative works do cast significant effect on individual and on a particular culture in a society. Psychologically, they enhance life by adding beauty to our surroundings. It is a source of pleasure and relaxation from the stresses of life. Socially, imaginative works play a number of different roles by virtue of its capacities to embody symbolic significance to their audience. But when it comes to the nature of imaginative works, where it is derived from, and whether it will last long in progress of human civilization, things seem to be a little bit complex, and not always bear a good image.
Admittedly, the cradle of imaginative works, such as novels, plays, films, fairy tales, and legends, is the real world and the authors' ideas and materials of these works do derive from the fresh soil of reality. Consider a simple fact that the spirit of imaginative work is abstracted through day-to-day life, and then after his careful renovation, magnificent embellishment, and creative arrangement, the author incarnate the apparently dull and tedious works with charming characters and sophisticated plot. Always, it is by its soundly grounded in reality that make imaginative work sometimes reflect societal problems and mirror individual's mental world. One apt illustration of this point involves scientific fiction. It is well known that scientific fiction is derived from people's curiosity and thirst of science and technology. So, numerous scientific fictions are produced to keep up with the vagaries of readers, which in turn stimulate people creativity to probe unpredictable and uncharted areas. And, unrealistic though sometimes they seem to be, these fictions, such as those about planes appeared in middle age legends, truly witnessed and recorded social civilization accurately.
However, in contrast to the imaginative world fiction presents to us, literal report is more worthy of respect for its objective record, unbiased portrait, and insightful reasoning. Tracing the nature of imaginative works, we can easily find that though, to some extent, it is the product of reality, to flourish its content or simply to attract more audience, the writers will, more or less, add some personal opinions or subjective imagination to these works which will inevitably undermine their accuracy. Considering some of these works are oriented in society or, more definitely, to cater the needs of specific readers, their subjectivity and irrationality will be further aggravated by their utilitarian goals. Nevertheless, compared with imaginative works, factual accounts, by virtue of its thoroughness in reporting and impartiality in recording, are widely accepted and have a more lasting significance. Apparent rigid forms, dull words, and plain description do not hinder people from appreciating their values in objectivity. Moreover, imagination containing emotions is a subjective thing. On the other hand, factual accounts based on reality are objective. And, when it comes to our minds to decide which one is preferable in accuracy, we tend to unsentimentally choose factual accounts and jettison imaginative works which is believed to transmit irrationality and unfettered venting of emotions.
Although imaginative works is of less accuracy, its effect in our daily life and social research informs us that their creations will also have a lasting significance. In societal level, novels, plays, and fictions also serve our livings by compensating the negative effects reality. Sometimes, preoccupation on too much factual things will lead to mental depress and psychological distortion for their rigid forms and tedious contents. Imaginative works, however, readily provide opportunities for readers to blot out of the real world and enter into a pleasurable and passive mental state in which the worries and anxieties are effectively deterred by becoming absorbed in a fascinating plot. So, we often attach importance and significance for their utility in preparing a good mood for tomorrow's work and maintain a salutary mental state.
In general, it is by the interaction of both imaginative works and factual accounts that human society keeps going forward. Though sometimes inaccurate imaginative works may seem to be, in comparison with factual accounts, their significance lies in their assurance in people' mind, rendering the invisible visible, and revealing the true confrontation of life. |
