Issue103 the study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives.

Today, people emphasize on the importance of changing since this society is dominated by break-neck speed changes. So some claim that the sense of the past is no longer important or only related to our daily lives. However, history has considerable value in almost all spheres of our lives.

Conscious of it or not, we identify ourselves through history in both individual angle and social respect. Primary, our sense personal identity roots deep in the past that concerns with genealogy and family history. In term of our social identification, we often label us as occidental or oriental, American or Chinese, and Christian or Buddhist, which means we identify with some certain cultures and culture comprises the whole complex of customs, traditions, values, behaviors, and so on, all of which belong to or exist in the range of history. For example, Analects of Confucius, a book written centuries before, is considered as one of the representations of China's culture. In this respect, the study of history is essential for us to understand the cultures that we identify with.

The lessons in history can also alarm us to avoid some mistakes that may bring painful suffering to us. In world war two, the hail of bombs killed millions of people and produced great destruction on the environment. Also, the falling of the nuclear bombs on Japan showed the world the terrible results of this fatal weapon. People began to learn that it is not war but mutual understanding that can solve international conflicts. Therefore, today most nations turn to United Nations for solution of contest. So catastrophes in history can teach us lessons how to prevent those disasters form happening again. In addition, history provides a span of facts and possibilities upon which we can predict what would happen in future. Our prediction in future depends on what happened and what did not happened in past. For example, in astronomy, we prophesy when a comet will appear in the sky basing on records of activities of the comet in past. Similarly, weather forecast owe its basement to the collection of weather information before as well as in many other fields such as economy and social sciences. So Just as Francis Bacon once said: "history make people wise.", the wisdom of prophecy demands the study of history.

Last but not least, history is more than often used as a political tool to enhance national cohesion or international understanding. History courses in formal education help the youth to develop a sense of patriotism. Learning history of other countries can understand them well and express respects for them, which would reduce the risk of confrontation.

In sum, to demonstrate the value of history is not a easy job. However, the discussion above may help more people to realize that value of history is not limited to the range of daily lives.
