Maybe u have sth to prepare before flying.
1. learn cooking. If u are a good cook, u will be very popular here, hehe.

2. practise ur spoken English and ur listening.
   Some native speakers speak very quickly and I can hardly catch what they sa
id especially on the first two days( at this time, i always interrupt them wit
h"Pardon" when they begin to monologize(zi shuo zi hua).

In my view, maybe u 'd better improve ur pronunciation if u have such problem,
some of my classmates have strong accent and poor pronunciation which makes t
hemselves quite hard to be understood.
While i think generally Shanghaiese have advantages in pronunciation, hehe.
I don't think u need to learn much vocabulary before flying since u can learn
it quickly after u come here and learning seems easy.
A good dict is essential, maybe an electrical one( i recommend a big one with
large capacity) and one with many illustrative sentence(say, Oxford Advanced l
earner's Dict, I have one with Prof Guosun Lu's signature, hehe)

Try to have more contact with Americans, and u will be gradually familar with
their accent(ppl here use a little different accent from what i learnt before,
and i begin to realize what British & American English really mean.)

The Speak test(or sth else) is not that horrible, but if u really worry about
it, u can prepare for TSE since they are similar.

3.Ur mind preparation:
Try to be optimistic when confront miserable things.
People here are generally very kind. I often receive much help even from total
ly unknown people(say, once I was carrying my food(20 kg rice and many vegetab
les, a Lao girl stopped beside me and offered to give me a lift. Many thanks t
o her, or i will be exhausted if i carried them myself (u know, buses here r n
ot very convient.))
but they still have to learn many things, hehe, anyway, it is interesting to l
earn new things.

4. For math(or related area) TA
Learn Tex, it will be helpful since u need to give ur handouts to students as a TA.
