  Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.

Although the science and technology have developed rapidly since the Industries Revolution, some nonmainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology, fortune-telling, psychic and paranormal pursuits still exist as a great part of our society. However, opposite to what the speaker have stated, in my opinion, these nonmainstream areas play little role in society because they could not satisfy human need that are not addressed by mainstream science.

There are some reasons that could explain why these nonmainstream areas exist. At the first place, many people have little knowledge of the mainstream science. However, they need some theories to help them explain some phenomenon of the nature and human society, thus to give some suggestions to their activity and puzzle. Instead of asking for the mainstream science, they present their queries in another way to the astrology, fortune-telling and the like. At the second place, some people are equipped with modern science but know little about how these nonmainstream science works and just curious about these nonmainstream science. Furthermore, sometimes when people are facing a dilemma, they could not grasp what their future will be like and appeal to the nonmainstream science to get some advice and search for some confidence about themselves. These persons also contribute to the existence of nonmainstream science.

The existence of nonmainstream science seems satisfy some people's needs surfacely, however, these needs are not indeed satisfied base on these wrong theories.  Those who without much knowledge of modern science but want suggestions about their problems and activities could get some advice or suggestion from the astrology, fortune-telling or the like at last. But the advice or suggestion are useless in solving their problems even enlarger the severity of the problems because these advice and suggestion are not generalize from the facts and could not direct our activity.  Moreover, the results of nonmainstream science often are subjective and could not be repeated anymore. One could obtain two distinguishing results at different time. To those who are curious about the nonmainstream science, it is easy to dispel their curiosity by uncovering the truth of how these "science" developed and how they can get the results. In fact, almost all the nonmainstream science appears mysterious to the public, thus to attract people's attentions. When those who facing the dilemma, the advice from the nonmainstream science is perhaps only soothing to their choice and what they need to analysis the problems and themselves relying on the methods of mainstream science to make a rational choice. In sum, the little usage of the nonmainstream science could not be helpful to people’s requirement, and it is the mainstream science that could really satisfying human needs. What’s more, if the needs are not addressed by mainstream science, the only reason is that people are not adept to employ the modern science to every need of human beings.

Admittedly, some phenomenon could not be explained well by the modern science; in this case, people probably would seek for the answers by the nonmainstream science. As for this situation, only development of mainstream science could take place of the nonmainstream science. Some needs that could not addressed by mainstream science don’t mean that they could not forever. Time will prove that the answers made by nonmainstream science are wrong ones

To conclude, the nonmainstream science is not efficient to satisfy human needs really and truly. They can only satisfy some curiosity about the unknown things and serve as balms sometimes if they have any usage. But what they act in the society, as a whole, is very little.

我觉得心理问题可以由心理学来解决，社会问题有社会学，我还是觉得它不能play a vital role。

不过你的修改给了我不少启发，我想我可以从心理学方面具体化，文章确实太抽象了

绝对了点把？个人认为最终还是要由科学的主流科学来解释一切，但没有绝对真理的时候只能由非主流科学暂时安慰：
